Women's Soccer's Second-Half Rally Falls Short in 2-1 Loss at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – In its first road game of 2025, American University women's soccer netted its first goal of the season during a strong second-half push but came up just short in a 2-1 loss at Longwood. AU put seven of its eight shots on target after halftime, only to be denied by goalkeeper Sara Curtis' seven saves.

Inside the Box Score
  • AU's first goal of the season came from sophomore Nariah Goldman, who posted the second goal of her career.
  • Graduate student Jennifer McGuire assisted on Goldman's goal, marking the second assist of her career.
  • The Eagles trailed 5-1 in shots on goal in the first half, but finished the game tied 8-8. Three of those shots on goal were fired by freshman Logan Rivers, while two came from freshman Jayden Fisher.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Addison Roemer made six saves, tying for her third-most in a single game.
  • While no corner kicks resulted in goals, it was Longwood with a 9-1 advantage in corners taken.
 How It Happened
  • Roemer was tested early and often in the first half, and made her first save in the fifth minute as she punched one out from the top of the net.
  • Two more saves by Roemer in the 21st and 23rd minutes kept Longwood off the board, and she made a fourth save with just over six minutes remaining in the first half.
  • With only two minutes on the clock before halftime, Longwood's Samantha Fischer got a foot on a long, downfield pass from Coryn Silberstein and put it into the top right of the net for a 1-0 lead.
  • Off a well-placed pass from McGuire in the 56th minute, Goldman fired from the top of the box and found the lower right corner to even the score at 1-1 and net AU's first goal of the season.
  • The pace kept up for both teams, with both keepers making a save in the following two minutes, and Roemer adding another in the 61st.
  • The shot for American came from senior Phoebe Merrigan who took advantage of a misplayed ball by a Longwood defender and got off a shot rebounded off a diving Curtis.
  • In the 64th minute, Longwood's Emma Jones took a shot blocked by junior Bella Vozar, but the deflection found the feet of Madison Fitzpatrick and Roemer was one beat shy of getting back into position to make the save.
  • Rivers gave AU chances with two more shots on goal, but both were saved by Curtis.
  • In the final seconds, senior Eliza Fisher took a strong shot from 40 yards out, but it once again found the hands of Curtis for her seventh and final save.
Up Next
  • The Eagles are back at home for a non-conference match-up with VCU at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 21.
