Women's Soccer Drops a One-Goal Season Opener to George Washington

WASHINGTON – Two strong scoring chances for the Eagles were both saved, and the first game back on Reeves Field ended in a 1-0 loss to visiting George Washington for American University women's soccer. AU totaled 10 shots in the match compared to four for the Revolutionaries.

Inside the Box Score
  • American finished with a 10-4 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
  • Julia Bilal scored the lone goal of the game, putting GW on the board in the 39th minute.
  • AU's Addison Roemer and GW's Kate Silverstein each made two saves.
  • Shots on goal for the Eagles came from freshman Natalia Croce, and graduate student Jennifer McGuire.
 How It Happened
  • The best look at goal in the first half for AU came early on from sophomore Maddie Hurowitz.
  • In the eighth minute, Hurowitz stole the ball from a GW defender and put her left foot on a shot that just missed to the left of the goal.
  • Possession favored the Eagles in the half, but all four shots were off target.
  • With less than seven minutes remaining before halftime, the Revs converted on a corner kick in the 39th minute as Julia Bilal headed in a goal off the long corner kick from Alex Caldwell.
  • Roemer made contact but it slipped past her outstretched hands into the left corner.
  • Three early second-half shots went wide for AU, and Roemer made a save in the 67th minute, her second of the game, to keep GW at a single tally.
  • With 21:30 remaining in the match, McGuire fired a long shot from just outside the top of the box that had to be saved over the bar by Silverstein.
  • Less than three minutes remained when Croce got a foot on the ball in the scramble after a corner kick, but Silverstein was able to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard.
