Elgersma Named PL Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Takahashi Earns Preseason Recognition

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Senior Troy Elgersma was named 2025 Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, the third year in a row that an Eagle has taken home the honor. Graduate student Taku Takahashi joined Elgersma on the Preseason All-League Team, and AU was picked to finish third in the preseason poll. 

Elgersma is coming off an excellent junior season that earned him the 2024 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year award, AU's first since 2016. The midfielder led the conference in assists with seven, and added three goals. 

Takahashi has been a mainstay in American's back line over the last two seasons, playing in all but one game and recording three goals and four assists.

BU earned the top spot in the League's preseason poll, earning 75 points (four first place votes), while the defending champion Bucknell landed in second with 70 points (four place votes). AU followed closely behind in third, earning 67 points and two first place votes. 

The preseason poll and individual awards were voted on by the men's soccer coaches from each institution. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.

The Eagles open their 2025 campaign in California, beginning with a matchup against California Baptist on Thursday, August 21. They'll travel to Los Angeles to meet Loyola Marymount on Sunday, August 24. AU's Patriot League schedule opens on Saturday, September 13 against Colgate at home.

2025 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year
Troy Elgersma, American, Jr., F, Redlands, Calif. / Redlands

2024 Stats: 19 GP, 19 GS, 2 goals, 7 assists, 13 points
*Elgersma led the League in assists (7), ranked tied for second in game-winning goals (2), and tied for fifth in points (13).
*The junior forward started all 19 games, helping power an Eagles offense that finished tied for second in the League with 25 goals scored.
*Over 55 career appearances, Elgersma has recorded 28 points on seven goals and 14 assists.
*In the 2024 Patriot League Tournament semifinal win over Loyola Maryland, he tallied an assist and converted a penalty kick to advance the Eagles to the semifinal match.

2025 Patriot League Midfielder of the Year
Diego Rived, Boston University, Jr., M, Zaragoza, Spain / Doral Academy Prep (Fla.)

2024 Stats: 18 GP, 17 GS, 1 goal, 3 assists, 5 points
*The reigning 2024 Patriot League Midfielder of the Year returns after starting 17 games last season, recording one goal and three assists for five points, including his first career goal against Army West Point.
*Rived played a key role in helping the Terriers post four shutouts and secure a share of the regular-season title with a 4-1-4 League record.
*Entering his senior campaign, the Zaragoza, Spain native has seven career points in 54 appearances for Boston University.

2025 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year
Quin DeLaMater, Boston University, Jr., D, Marietta, Ga. /Hillgrove

2024 Stats: 17 GP, 15 GS, 3 goals, 3 assists, 9 points
*
The 2024 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year is back after starting 15 games last season, tallying three goals and three assists for nine points while anchoring a Terrier defense that earned the No. 1 seed.
*DeLaMater was instrumental in leading Boston University's defensive unit to four shutouts during the 2024 campaign.
*The senior has appeared in 42 games, starting 33 and has tallied nine career points on three goals and three assists.

2025 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year
Fred Lapworth, Bucknell, Jr., GK, Banbury, England / Banbury Academy

2024 Stats: 20 GP, 20 GS, 71 saves, 1.04 goals against average, 8 shutouts
*Lapworth led the League with eight shutouts and ranked second with 71 saves, helping the Bison capture the Patriot League Championship last season.
*The senior earned back-to-back Goalkeeper of the Week honors (9.23 and 9.30) and recorded five shutouts in League play, finishing with the League's best goals-against average (.556).
*Over his career, Lapworth has made 127 saves and recorded nine shutouts in 38 appearances for Bucknell.

2025 Preseason All-Patriot League Men's Soccer by the Numbers (2024 Stats)
Ten of the 11 student-athletes named to the 2025 Preseason All-Patriot League Men's Soccer Team earned spots on one of the three 2024 All-Patriot League Teams.
Elgersma, Rived, DeLaMater and Lapworth were joined on the first team by Boston University junior midfielder Andrea Di Blasio and Bucknell junior midfielder Jimmy Pombor.
2024 Patriot League Men's Soccer Rookie of the Year and Colgate sophomore forward Blake Pipkin, Lafayette senior forward Beaux Lizewski and Loyola Maryland graduate defender Jordy Luchies earned second-team honors, while Colgate senior midfielder Cason Stafford was a third-team selection.
