BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Redshirt freshman
Kaden Milheim took fifth place at the 121st EIWA Championships, while five other American University wrestlers stood on the podium in the top eight of their weight classes. Milheim went 4-2 on the weekend, including a pin and a technical fall. Four out of AU's six placewinners finished above their seed coming into the tournament.
Notable
- Milheim took fifth by way of the consolation bracket, earning three wins yesterday and winning the fifth place match against Gunnar Filipowicz of Army via forfeit today.
- Coen Bainey, Raymond Lopez, Jack Nies, and Caleb Campos all finished sixth in their weight classes after all of them advanced as far as the fifth place match. Will Jarrell finished eighth after dropping the 7th place match to Drexel's Ibrahim Ameer, 13-4. The graduate student ends his final season with 21 victories, and 68 in his career.
- Lopez lost a nailbiting bout in the consolation semis that would be the longest of the tournament, battling with Army's #22 Ethan Berginc into two intense rideout periods after the wrestlers were locked at 1-1 at the end of regulation. A takedown was given to Lopez in the first sudden victory period, but it was called off after an official's review. The score remained tied until Berginc landed a takedown and four near fall points in the second rideout period for the win.
- The junior 133-pounder went back-and-forth with Binghamton's Micah Roes in the fifth place match, but a late takedown and near fall points gave Roes the 14-9 win. Lopez ends his season with 22 wins, going 3-3 at the EIWA Championships and a sixth place finish.
- Caleb Campos fell to #28 Dalton Harkins of Army in the consolation semifinal, then fell just short in a rematch against Bucknell's Myles Takats. The wrestlers were tied at 4-4 at the start of the third period, and Takats jumped in front with a takedown and a stalling point.
- Bainey ends his redshirt freshman season with 13 wins, and Milheim ends with 14 to lead their class. Nies, a redshirt senior, ends his season with 10 victories and 38 in his career.
- Lopez took home the BIlly Sheridan Memorial Award for the most pins in the tournament in the least amount of time, with three pins.
- The Eagles totaled 16 wins in the two-day tournament, including five pins, two technical falls, and a major decision.
