EASTON, Pa. – A game that started even quickly tipped in the direction of the hosting No. 7 seed, Lafayette Leopards, and the No. 10 seeded American University women's basketball team fell, 87-53, on the road in Kirby to cap off the Eagles' season.
Inside the Box Score
- Molly Driscoll topped both teams offensively. The freshman guard finished the contest with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting and stuffed her stat line with four rebounds, an assist, and two steals.
- As is typical for AU, Cecilia Kay led on the boards, grabbing 15 to lead all players from both squads on the hardwood. Offensively, she capped out with seven points. Freshman Madisyn Moore-Nicholson had a career-high three blocks on the night.
- The Leopards outshot the Eagles 51 to 27 percent overall and 40 to 15 percent from three point range, dropping 10 3-point baskets to AU's four.
- Lafayette had four players in double digits: Abby Antognoli (16), Teresa Kiewiet (16), Sauda Ntaconayigize (15), and Emma Shields (15). Ntaconayigize went 5-of-7 from deep, sinking half of Lafayette's three point baskets.
- On the boards, the Leopards would win the battle 46-40.
How it Happened
- Anna Rescifina got the Eagles on the board first with a hook shot but Lafayette responded on the next possession with a three pointer and then capitalized on an AU turnover to go up 5-2 early in Kirby.
- From there, the teams traded shots back and forth until American retook the lead, 10-9, on a free throw from Archer. The Leopards immediately responded, but the pace between the sides wasn't slowing up.
- At the media timeout, 4:65 to go in one, Driscoll and Kiewiet were both 2-of-2 from the floor. The Leopards had the narrow, 11-10, edge.
- Coming out of the timeout, Lafayette went on an 13-2 run, gaining control quickly and going up double to lead 24-12 with 1:30 to play in the first.
- It kept going the home team's way with Lafayette taking a 33-17 lead with 6:54 to go until halftime. Kay would take a trip to the line and drained both free throws, but the Eagles wouldn't score from the floor but once, off a layup from Elizabeth Archer, in over seven minutes.
- Going into halftime, Kay had 11 rebounds, just shy of half of AU's total 23 at that point, but the freshman hadn't been able to score from the floor in the first half, her three points coming from the free throw line. Driscoll had nine points on 4-of-7 shooting and was the only Eagle who'd made multiple baskets.
- At the break, Lafayette led 44-20 over American.
- The third started off in the same trajectory. The Leopards opened the second half by going on a 10-2 run to lead by 54-22 with 6:16 to play in the third.
- It would get worse for the Eagles; Lafayette would lead 66-32 by the end of the third. Driscoll was on 13 points heading into the fourth, but aside from Rescifina, who'd made another layup, she was carrying the offensive efforts of the squad.
- Towards the end of the game, Kay and Bailey Garbee were finally able to get some points from the floor, finishing with seven and six respectively.
- The teams would tie the fourth quarter, taking 21 points apiece. The Eagles would be unable to make a dent in the difference though, and Lafayette would claim the victory and survive and advance to take on the No. 2 seed, Army on the road on Monday, March 10.
