Win Streak Ends as Shorthanded Men's Basketball Falls at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Playing shorthanded due to injuries and illness, American University men's basketball saw its seven-game win streak come to an end Wednesday night with a 71-49 loss at Bucknell (11-13, 7-4). The Eagles (14-10, 8-3) were without two starters and had just nine available players from their 17-man roster.

Notable Numbers
  • All nine available AU players saw at least 11 minutes on the floor, but some of those players have also been fighting illness.
  • Matt Mayock led the Eagles with 10 points, while Matt Rogers and Julen Iturbe added nine each.
  • Eric Michaels was AU's most efficient scorer, finishing with eight points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor.
  • The Eagles missed an uncharacteristic five free throws, going 12-for-17, and shot 34.8 percent in the game.
  • Both Elijah Stephens and Greg Jones were out of the lineup for AU. Including Geoff Sprouse, who now has missed all but the first Patriot League contest, the Eagles were without three of their five leading scorers.
  • In all, American had its chances with 46 shots taken to Bucknell's 45, but the Eagles relied heavily on long range shots that didn't fall.
  • Bucknell's Noah Williamson led all players with a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds.
First Half
  • The Eagles hit just 1-of-8 from long range in the first half, and 7-of-20 overall.
  • After getting whistled for their first three fouls in a 20-second span, the Eagles found themselves on the wrong end of a 9-0 run that put Bucknell up 19-8 at 11:40.
  • Wyatt Nausadis broke up the run with a driving layup at 10:56, but the Bison went back ahead by double digits and held that lead for the rest of the period.
  • Bucknell's largest lead of the half was 16 points, 32-16 with 2:28 left.
  • The only points scored the rest of the way came on a jumper from Lincoln Ball in the final minute, and the Eagles trailed 32-18 at the break.
  • AU turned the ball over nine times in the first half, but the Eagles had a 12-10 edge on the glass.
Second Half
  • The Bison took a 20-point lead just under five minutes in to the second half, and AU came within no fewer than 17 the rest of the way.
  • Iturbe hit a pair of three-pointers down the stretch, but AU was just 4-of-13 overall.
  • Bucknell had made just one trey in the opening half to match American, but the Bison went 5-for-9 in the second half.
  • With 10:20 to go, the Bison had their largest lead of 29, but AU narrowed it to 22 by the final buzzer.
