Dominant Second Half Lifts Lacrosse to 13-7 Win over GW

WASHINGTON – Junior midfielders Kellie Linehan and Reagan Murdoch scored four goals each on Wednesday afternoon at the Jacobs Complex, leading the American University lacrosse team to a 13-7 victory over George Washington. Senior captain Maddy Spratt's four assists brought her career total to 64, setting a new program record to add an exclamation point to a stellar day for the Eagles.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • AU had seven different goal scorers, led by respective season-highs from Kellie Linehan and Reagan Murdoch with four goals apiece. Linehan now has 13 goals to tie Maddy Spratt for the team lead, and Murdoch has 12.
  • With four assists as part of clinical day distributing the ball, Spratt brought her career total to set a new program record. The previous record was set at 62 by Casey Harkins ('21), as Spratt now stands alone as AU's all-time assists leader.
  • Freshman midfielder Caroline McBride scored her first collegiate goal at the 10:27 mark of the fourth quarter, and junior attacker Rachel Kolton tallied her first goal of the season. Alyssa Apuzzo and Becca Frank also found the back of the net to round out the scoring for the Eagles.
  • The Eagles outshot the Revolutionaries 29-24, and matched GW with 20 shots on goal.
  • Defensively, AU had one of its strongest games of the season. The team tied a season-low of seven goals allowed, while causing three turnovers and collecting ten ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Caeligh Forti continued her consistent start to the season in net, stopping 13 shots. She now has 61 on the year and holds a 50% save percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a back-and-forth first quarter that ended with AU in the lead 3-2. Murdoch got the scoring started for the Eagles just 46 seconds in, finishing off a pinpoint feed from Spratt after cutting to the crease.
  • After an answer from GW to tie the game, Kellie Linehan fired a free position shot past Gabi Greth to gain the lead back for AU. Kolton followed with a goal off the bench, coming off another assist from Spratt.
  • Grace Curry scored with just over 90 seconds left in the quarter to get GW back within one, but AU didn't let go of the lead for the rest of the game.
  • Becca Frank scored in the opening minutes of the second quarter, while Reagan Murdoch put one through with just five seconds remaining. AU led 5-3 going into halftime.
  • The third quarter loomed large for the Eagles, keeping their foot on the gas and scoring four straight goals to bust open the game and take a 9-3 lead. Linehan had two in the quarter, and Spratt and Murdoch both put one through.
  • The scoring barrage continued in the fourth quarter, with four more goals for the Eagles from Linehan, McBride, Apuzzo, and Murdoch. McBride's first collegiate goal came on a free position opportunity, placing her shot into the top right corner to beat Greth.
  • Forti was excellent in the second half, saving seven of 11 shots sent her way to stymie GW.
