National Girls & Women in Sports Day Draws Enthusiastic Crowd to Bender Arena

WASHINGTON - More than 80 local youths participated in an annual event held by American University Athletics to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Bender Arena was the site of the February 8 free clinic for kids, following a game for the AU women's basketball team against Lehigh.

Laughter and high-fives filled the gym as young participants jumped into the action alongside student-athletes. Kids had the chance to rotate through stations led by members of the field hockey, women’s soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, women’s basketball, wrestling, dance, and cheerleading teams—learning new skills and getting a taste of different sports along the way.

“National Girls and Women in Sports Day was such a cool event to be a part of. It allowed me to spread my love for the game to many young girls. Participating in sports is so much more than just a game. Being able to call myself a female athlete represents all the women of the past and of the future. It was so cool to be able to have fun while teaching what it means to be a woman in sports.”

- Olivia Morraye, Field Hockey

Following welcome remarks from Deputy Director of Athletics/SWA Katie Benoit, the youths were split into groups to rotate to each activity. The teams set up stations to teach skills, introduce their sports, and allow the kids to just have fun while also being active and engaged.

The clinic hosted by our teams to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day is one of my favorite events of the year. It’s an incredible opportunity for our student-athletes to come together, inspire the next generation of female athletes, and introduce our youngest fans to their sports. The pure joy in the gym is undeniable.

Beyond the physical benefits, sports help build confidence, resilience, and teamwork. This clinic allows our student-athletes to not only share their skills but also their passion for the game. The entire day is filled with positivity and excitement as we encourage young participants to stay active, step outside their comfort zones, and try something new.
