Men’s Basketball Drops Final Non-Conference Game at No. 21 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Facing a top-25 opponent on the road, American University men's basketball fell 95-51 at No. 21 Virginia on Monday night at John Paul Jones Arena. The Cavaliers (11-1) opened a 20-point halftime lead and shot 70 percent from the field in the second half to pull away.

Notable 
  • Sophomore Julen Iturbe hit his first three attempts from long range and finished with a game-high 13 points for AU.
  • Junior Greg Jones also reached double figures with 10 points, while senior Geoff Sprouse and freshman Madden Collins scored nine points apiece.
  • Collins added a game-high three steals.
  • Thijs De Ridder finished with a career-high 27 points to lead five players who reached double digits in scoring for Virginia.
  • The Cavaliers finished with a 45-23 rebounding advantage and a 21-9 lead in second-chance points.
  • AU got 24 of its 51 points on three-pointers, and took only six free throws in the contest.
  • Virginia had 18 attempts at the line, but made only 10. From the field, the Cavaliers shot over 62 percent.
First Half
  • After falling behind by seven early, a jumper from Collins at 15:05 made it a five-point game, 13-8.
  • The Eagles missed their next 10 shots and went without a point for nearly seven minutes before Jones hit a three from the corner.
  • AU limited the damage with solid defense during the drought, and the Cavaliers led just 22-11 after the triple from Jones.
  • UVA picked up the pace from there, building a 22-point lead in the final minutes of the half before taking a 45-25 lead into the break.
  • Virginia shot nearly 55 percent from the field in the half compared to AU's 29 percent, and led 26-12 on the glass.
  • Iturbe hit his first three attempts from long range and led AU with nine points at the break.
Second Half
  • The Eagles scored the first four points of the second half, but could get no closer the rest of the way.
  • Virginia pulled further away with an 11-0 run, going up 58-31 at 15:40.
  • De Ridder continued to do damage, and the Cavaliers rarely missed, shooting 70 percent in the half.
  • UVA led by its largest margin on its final shot of the game, its ninth three-pointer.


Next Up
  • The Eagles will take a break for the holiday before returning home to host Loyola Maryland at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31 in the Patriot League opener for both teams.
