WASHINGTON - With the score tied going into the final two bouts, #27
Caleb Campos came up with a pin to lift the American University wrestling team to a 20-18 victory over George Mason on Thursday night in Bender Arena. Major decisions from
Kaden Milheim and
Austin Craft loomed large in the come-from-behind effort as well, giving the Eagles their second win of the season.
Notable
- With the dual starting at heavyweight, Emmanuel Ulrich got the Eagles out to a 3-0 lead with a decision over Herbert Billups.
- The redshirt sophomore wrestled with patience, going into the third period tied 1-1 and finding an opening to score points. He defended a shot from Billups well, spinning to get on top of him and score a takedown to win it 4-1.
- After AU lost a decision and a major decision at 125 and 133, Raymond Lopez stepped up to get the Eagles back in the dual with a composed 7-1 win.
- Following a takedown in the first period and an escape in the second, Lopez had to protect a 4-1 lead into the third. The senior stayed out of a takedown and scored his own in the final 10 seconds to put the score out of reach.
- A major decision from #20 Kaden Cassidy put the Patriots up 11-6, but the response from two of AU's young wrestlers in the next two bouts turned the tide of the dual.
- At 157, Kaden Milheim delivered bonus points with a major decision over Thomas Stofka. After falling down 3-0 in the first period, the redshirt sophomore wrestled to three takedowns, three escape points, and riding time to win it 13-4.
- Austin Craft wrestled aggressively at 165, setting the tone early with a violent takedown of Jackson Albert in the first period. He had one in each of the next two periods, adding on a reversal and riding time to win 12-3. In the flash of two matches, the Eagles were in front 14-11.
- Hunter Hohman was defeated 4-0 by Logan Messer at 174, putting pressure on the 184 match between Campos and Jack Kelly.
- Campos was in control of the match from the start, scoring three takedowns in the first period to grab a 9-2 lead.
- Kelly almost turned the match on its head just a minute into the second period, getting on top of Campos and nearly putting his shoulders to the mat for a pin. Campos pounced off his back, turned Kelly over, and locked him down for a pin. A thrilling scramble that saw Campos turn defense into offense, the redshirt junior gave his team their largest possible lead when they needed it most.
- #21 Malachi Duvall put up 12 points against Caleb Close at 197, but the major decision it wasn't enough to tie the score.
