History Made in Bender as American Men's Basketball Rolls Past Central Penn, 115-50

WASHINGTON - It was a historic evening inside Bender Arena as American University men's basketball rolled to a 115–50 win over Central Penn, marking the largest margin of victory in program history. Seven Eagles scored in double figures, and AU dominated the glass with a 55–30 edge, its highest rebound total in more than two decades.

Notable Numbers
  • The team's 65-point margin of victory was the most in a game in program history, beating out a 61-point win in 1995.
  • AU's point total of 115 was the most since that 1995 contest when the Eagles beat Marymount by a score of 123-62. This was also their first win of at least 50 points since that game.
  • The team corralled at least 50 rebounds in a game for the first time since Jan. 30, 2004 against Lafayette.
  • A healthy mix of Eagles made a splash on the court. Junior Greg Jones led the way with 18 points, freshmen Dean Hogans and Chris Eagan had 16 and 15 points, respectively, sophomores Julen Iturbe and Wyatt Nausadis added 14 each, and freshmen Madden Collins and Kade Sebastian had 13 and 10 points, respectively.
  • Eagan went 6-of-8 from the field, Nausadis hit 5-of-7, and Sebastian was 4-for-6 including a pair of three-pointers.
  • Hogans was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine, while Collins added four steals, four assists, and six rebounds to his 13 points.
  • Iturbe led the team in rebounds with 10 for a double-double, his first as an Eagle. The stat line didn't stop there for Iturbe, who also led AU with six assists.
  • The Eagles showed both speed and physicality, steamrolling the Knights in both fastbreak points (36-4) and points in the paint (62-14).
First Half
  • Junior Matt Mayock nailed the team's first three-pointer of the contest, extending the Eagles' lead to 22-4 and forcing a Knights timeout.
  • Central Penn would find some momentum later with an 11-6 scoring run to get within 13 points at 28-15.
  • Iturbe put an end to the Knights' run, swishing a three-pointer and then finishing on an and-one two-hand jam later. Both scoring plays were assisted by Mayock.
  • The Eagles' defense held the Knights to just four points in the first 8:13, out-rebounding them 9-2 in the process.
  • The defense also held Central Penn scoreless from beyond the arc (0-6), while offensively, AU made five of their 16 three-point attempts.
  • The Eagles went into the locker room with a commanding 58-32 lead at halftime.
Second Half
  • AU kept its foot on the gas, going on an immediate 11-0 run in the first 2:48 of the second half.
  • The Eagles converted their first 10 field goals of the half, helping extend the lead to 83-42.
  • At one point, the Eagles had five freshmen on the court at once: Luke Brown, Collins, Hogans, Sebastian, and Eagan.
  • A layup from Brown with 7:06 to go in the game put AU over the 100-point mark.
  • The Eagles ended up out-scoring the Knights 57-18 in the half, winning the game with a final score of 115-50.

Next Up
  • The Eagles face a tough road test at Rutgers out of the Big 10, heading to New Jersey for a 6:30 p.m. tip on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
