Series History
- It's an intriguing matchup on Tuesday, as AU's only loss in Patriot League play came at the hands of Lafayette in a tightly-played match on Oct. 4 in Easton, 1-0.
- In that match, the Leopards found their goal when they caught the Eagles on their heels just 17 seconds into the second half. Lafayette immediately sent the ball into AU's box, and Riley Martin found enough space to beat Matthew Tibbetts to the far right corner.Â
- The Eagles lead the all-time series with a 16-5-8 record.Â
What to Know About American: 8-7-2 (7-1-1), #1 Seed
- American enters the Patriot League Tournament as the top team in the conference. At the end of AU's best season in nine years, seven Eagles landed on one of the All-Patriot League teams and the team took home three major awards.
- Troy Elgersma was named Midfielder of the Year, Matthew Tibbetts the Goalkeeper of the Year, and the Coaching Staff of the Year was awarded to Zach Samol and his assistants. Mustapha Sowe and Jonah Fogel took home First Team honors, while Ian Webb-Johnson and Taku Takahashi made the Second Team, and Sebastian Garces landed on the third team.
- The Eagles are coming off a 3-1 win over Navy in the final match of the season last Tuesday. AU's three goals came from Troy Elgersma, Toshi Davis, and Taku Takahashi.Â
- Elgersma provided the equalizer early in the second after the Eagles fell down a goal, while Davis let loose a highlight-reel strike from outside the box to put them in front, and Takahashi finished off a wonderful passing sequence with a tap-in to extend the lead late.
- Davis has found his stride in the attacking third as of late, scoring in both of the last two games. Before his goal against Navy, he skillfully placed a rebound into the top right corner of the net for the game-winning goal against Holy Cross on Oct. 31.Â
- Sowe leads the Eagles offensively, with 12 points on five goals and two assists. Elgersma matches his five goals, and Garces has dished out five assists with two goals.Â
- AU has proven to be a strong second half team, scoring 15 goals in the second 45 to just six in the first this year. Tibbetts made 34 first half saves, keeping the Eagles either tied or leading their opponents at halftime nine times. American went 8-1 in those games, showing Tibbetts' early stops to be vital to positive results.
What to Know About Lafayette: 7-6-6 (4-2-2), #6 Seed
- The Leopards are coming off a first round win over Army, upsetting the #3 seed 1-0. They won in dramatic fashion, with freshman midfielder Oliver Gordon scoring the game-winning goal in the 85th minute off an assist from Riley Martin.Â
- Lafayette nearly conceded just four minutes before scoring, when Army's Justin Davidyock hit the left post.Â
- The #6 seed came into the playoffs playing well, losing just one of their final 10 matches of the season (4-1-5). They had two impressive results to close out the regular season, taking down BU 2-0, and drawing Lehigh 1-1.Â
- The Leopards are led by Samir Dishnica on the attacking end, who has 11 points on four goals and three assists. Martin follows behind him with three goals and two helpers.Â
- Senior goalkeeper Eric Axtman has had a quality season in net for Lafayette, making 55 saves and leading the PL in GAA (.833).Â
- Lafayette has scored just 14 goals this season, averaging under one per game. On the flip side, the Leopards are the best defensive team in the PL by the numbers. They've allowed just 15 goals and have kept eight clean sheets.Â
