Hockey Tops Delaware to Cap Nonconference Play

NEWARK, Del. –– Four different goalscorers powered American University field hockey to a comfortable 5-1 win over Delaware on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles went undefeated (7-0) on the road this season and are riding a four game win streak. American was able to score at least once in every quarter, and all five of AU's goals came as the result of penalty corners.

Quick Notables
  • Sophie Willemse notched the first pair of American goals. Kendall Varty earned the assist on goal number one as the inserter on the penalty corner.
  • Agustina Roffo and Lotti Süme connected for American's third goal. It's Roffo's eighth goal of the year, second on the team in the stat.
  • Jordan Reicher, for a team-leading eleventh time this season, found the back of the cage for AU's fourth goal of the afternoon.
  • Süme, who got the assist on Roffo's goal, also earned an assist on Reicher's goal before scoring her own goal. The freshman defender now has five assists and three goals. Sarah Steinman and Emilia Winkler earned assists on Süme's goal. Winkler leads the team with 10 assists this season.
  • Pauline Gineste saved a penalty stroke to keep the Blue Hens from scoring their second goal in the final frame.
How It Happened
The first goal for American came early. Willemse got the service direct from Varty on the corner and was able to knock it back into the cage, sending the ball through traffic to put the Eagles up 1-nil in the sixth minute. Ten minutes later, in the 16th minute, Willemse struck again, picking up her second goal of the game, and fourth in four games, off another Eagles' penalty corner to double the lead.

The Blue Hens then scored on their own penalty corner, their second attempt of the game, in the 33rd minute to cut the Eagles' lead in half and prevent the shutout.

Two minutes after Delaware pulled within one, Roffo put American right back up two in the 35th minute. She got the tip in, redirecting the shot from Süme, to make the American lead 3-1.

In the fourth quarter, Eagles' keeper Pauline Gineste came up big with a penalty stroke save in the 51st minute to keep the Blue Hens from adding a second goal.

Süme put the finishing touches on the game, first assisting on Roffo's and then Reicher's goal, American's fourth of the contest, in the 48th minute, before herself scoring a goal in the 57th minute. Süme's goal was the fifth for AU, and American claimed the 5-1 victory. Both Winkler and Steinman assisted on the goal as inserter and stick-stopper on the penalty corner.

From Head Coach Jennings
"The team closed out another very successful road trip with a big win today against a quality opponent. Delaware did some great things in the midfield and we were fortunate to have withstood some moments of high pressure.

"Fortunately, our corner execution was brilliant and we used that to ride to a big win–we will look to learn the important lessons from today to help us prepare for senior day this weekend."

Coming Up
The Eagles return home to D.C. for the final game of the regular season, Senior Day and Alumni Day against conference opponent, Holy Cross on Nov. 1. Push back is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Jacobs Complex.
