Men's Soccer Draws Bucknell 0-0

LEWISBURG, Pa. - In a match that did not lack scoring opportunities for either side, the American University men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw against Bucknell on Saturday night. Despite both teams striking the post and six shots on target from the Eagles, neither team could find the back of the net. The result gives American a point and keeps the team in first place in the Patriot League.

Notable
  • The Eagles outshot Bucknell 10 to nine in total, with just two on target for the home side. American also generated four corner kicks to two for the Bison.
  • It was an active night for Mustapha Sowe, who took a season-high six shots and put three on target to lead the attacking effort for the Eagles.
  • Troy Elgersma, Reyes Parra, and Colin O'Brien each added shots on goal.
  • Matthew Tibbets made two saves on the night and recorded his third clean sheet of the season.
How it Happened
  • It was a tale of two halves when it came to the front foot of attacking play, with Bucknell in control in the first 45 minutes.
  • While Elgersma and Sowe put shots on target in the opening five minutes of the match, Bucknell commanded the half from that point forward.
  • In the 18th minute, David Krumov fired a shot into the chest of Tibbets for his first save of the night. 10 minutes later, Drew Roskos maintained possession off a cross from Krumov into the box, got the ball through traffic to Coehn Weaver, who fired a shot from close range off the left post.
  • The Bison fired off four more shots, before the end of the half, but only forced one routine save from Tibbetts on another shot from Krumov from well outside the box.
  • American was the aggressor in the second half, as Sowe began to find open areas in the attacking third.
  • After Sowe put a left-footed shot on target 48 seconds in, the Eagles generated back-to-back corner kicks two minutes later. Parra delivered a ball to the back post, and Sowe rose above a defender to put a header off the crossbar.
  • AU remained on the front foot, created an even better chance for Sowe in the 58th minute that required a miraculous save from Freddie Lapworth.
  • Sebastian Garces got to a lead ball from Jonah Fogel at midfield, touching it forward to Sowe and hitting him in stride. Sowe took a touch into the left side of the box and fired a shot, but a charging Lapworth sprawled to make a crucial save for Bucknell.
  • In the 72nd minute, O'Brien drove a shot to the bottom left corner that forced a diving stop from Lapworth. After recycling the rebound back out on the same possession, Parra floated a shot to the left side that Lapworth had to dive to get two hands to again. American was creating well, but couldn't beat Lapworth.
  • Neither team challenged either keeper the rest of the way.
Up Next
  • The Eagles will stay on the road next week, heading up to Massachusetts for a matchup with Holy Cross. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
