Field Hockey Takes Care of Business, Wins 4-2 at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. –– The American University field hockey field hockey team kept up its winning ways with a 4-2 win over Richmond on the road on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles scored twice in the first half and twice in the second, with four different goal scorers on the day, as they soared to victory over the Spiders for their eighth win in nine games.

Quick Notables
  • Olivia Morraye scored her first goal of the season. The sophomore defender earned the tally off a penalty corner she inserted.
  • After assisting on the first goal, Sophie Willemse grabbed the Eagles' second goal of the afternoon. She now has three on the season.
  • Lotti Süme, who came into the game with two goals in the last three games, earned an assist on AU's third goal of the afternoon.
  • Jordan Reicher, who had a two-game scoring drought returned to the score sheet for a team-leading ninth time this season when she scored the Eagles' fourth goal of the day.
  • Three of the Eagles' four goals came as the result of penalty corners.
How It Happened
The Eagles struck first and fast. On the Eagles' third penalty corner of the game in the fifth minute, Morraye was able to corral the ball after the initial attempt from the corner and send it high into the back of the cage to put AU up 1-nil.

A minute later, following another corner inserted by Morraye, Willemse's drag flick was true on its aim and split the defense to double the Eagles' lead 2-nil.

In the 17th minute though the Spiders cut the deficit in half and put AU on the defensive, the score now 2-1.

After halftime, the Eagles added insurance to their lead, scoring off yet another penalty corner in the 34th minute. This time, it was Roffo with redirect from Süme's shot and American was up 3-1.

The Spiders fought back in the fourth, they earned their first penalty corners of the game, and on the third one in the 52nd minute, earned a goal to pull back within one, down 3-2.

Reicher didn't let that scoreline last long. In the 56th minute, less than 15 seconds after Richmond pulled their goalkeeper to gain the advantage of an extra field player, Reicher carried the ball into the circle and true to form, backhanded it into the open cage.

American claimed the victory, 4-2, on the road to finish out the weekend with their second win on the bounce.

From Head Coach Jennings
"We are very happy to come away with a huge road win against a very strong Richmond team. We continue to grow and are finding different ways to be successful on both the offensive and defensive end which is a credit to how bought in our team is. Every week they are hungry to improve and we will need to continue that trend as we head into another important road weekend."

Coming Up
The Eagles are out on the road with a run of two more away games until the final game of the regular season on Nov. 1. For their next matchup, they'll take on Lehigh on Friday Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. before squaring off with Delaware on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m.
