Women's Soccer Drops 3-0 Decision to Navy

WASHINGTON - Quality chances were hard to come by for American University women's soccer as the Eagles suffered a 3-0 loss to visiting Navy on Wednesday afternoon at Reeves Field. The Mids made seven saves to earn the shutout against AU and improve to 2-2-2 in Patriot League play while the Eagles drop to 2-4.

Notable
  • Graduate student Jennifer McGuire and senior Phoebe Merrigan had two shots on goal each for American, with Merrigan taking four shots overall.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Addison Roemer made six saves for AU, while Navy keeper Natasha Stamrood had seven for the Mids.
  • Chiara Cosenza scored twice for Navy, while Marlee Heaven scored a third and also posted an assist.
How it Happened
  • Cosenza scored Navy's first goal just over six minutes into the game, collecting a rebounded shot by Heaven and catching Roemer off balance.
  • The Eagles held their own the rest of the first half with five shots on goal to Navy's three, and two corner kicks, but never forced Stamrood to make anything other than a routine save.
  • Just like in the first, the Mids put a goal in with just over six minutes elapsed in the second half to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Navy's Hannah Mulholland tracked down a cleared ball by Roemer and got it to Lizzie Emerson at the top left of the box. Emerson made a quick pass to Heaven who pivoted and struck it with her right foot into the top right of the box.
  • Roemer had her hands on the final goal by Cosenza in the 60th minute, but couldn't keep a hold on it as it slipped into the lower right corner.
  • The Eagles had three corner kicks in the second half for a 5-2 advantage overall, but were unable to create scoring opportunities with Navy's defense clearing it every time.

Up Next
  • The Eagles will play two of their final three regular-season games on the road, starting with a 1 p.m. contest at Boston University on Saturday, Oct. 18.
