Men's Soccer Falls to #3 West Virginia, 2-0

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The American University men's soccer team conceded two goals in the first half of Tuesday night's match against West Virginia, and the Eagles couldn't find their way back into the game. AU fell 2-0 to the Mountaineers, moving to 5-7-1 with the loss.

Notable
  • Matthew Tibbetts made for saves on the night, bringing his total up to 39 on the season.
  • Reyes Parra was AU's most active scoring threat, taking two shots and putting one on target.
  • The Eagles were outshot 12 to six and generated three corners to 12 for the Mountaineers.
  • Sophomore midfielder Javi Gonzalez and senior midfielder Tim Schliemann made their first starts of the season.
  • Tonight's match marks the end of American's non-conference schedule.
How it Happened
  • Matthew Tibbets kept West Virginia out of AU's net early, making three saves in a two-minute span from 11:37 to 13:37.
  • Still tied 0-0 in the 34th minute, Nicholas Beil was able to possess the ball in West Virginia's box, but the striker's shot was blocked.
  • The home side continued to crack away in the attacking third, owning the majority of possession and eventually scoring back-to-back goals through Pablo Pazos just three minutes apart.
  • Marcus Caldeira found Felix Ewald on the left side of the box, who played a low cross to Pozos for a tap in. Three minutes later, Christian Constantinos found Pozos charging towards the near post for a quality finish that beat Tibbetts.
  • American had a chance to get back into the game in the 40th minute, when a Reyes Parra free kick caught the hand of Bryce Swinehart and awarded AU a penalty. Reyes Parra took the try, but he was denied at the bottom left corner by Marc Bonnaire.
  • The Eagles had their most composed spell of possession in the opening of the second half, generated back-to-back corner kicks, including one that led to a header from Ian-Webb Johnson that narrowly missed the target.
  • Moad Ezzahir forced a save from Bonnaire in the 81st minute, AU's final shot of the match.
