WASHINGTON – It came down to the wire in Bender Arena when Boston University came in to play the American University women's basketball squad and despite a career-high 22 points from
Cecilia Kay, the Eagles were unable to hold off the Terriers and they fell 70-67.
Inside the Box Score
- The career-high 22 points from freshman Kay who led all players on the court. The forward was just one rebound away, with nine, from her third, and second consecutive, double-double. She also had three blocks, a steal, and an assist.
- Laura Nogues was the only other Eagle in double digit scoring position, going 4-for-7 from beyond the arc and 5-for-9 overall. She had 14 points and three steals, but she did allow eight turnovers.
- Ivy Bales topped all players on the court with 11 rebounds and tallied eight assists and two steals.
- Alex Giannaros and Sisi Bentley with combined for almost half of BU's offense, scoring 21 and 15, respectively. Bentley also topped the Terriers on the glass with seven rebounds.
How it Happened
- BU won the tip, but it was Pingree who was first on the board, sending up a layup to start scoring. AU got off to a strong start, going on an 8-2 run that forced a Terriers timeout.
- The lead extended further with two baskets from Anna Rescifina, as well as a free throw, and a layup from Grace Koepke, and then Eagles found themselves up 15-3 with 2:20 to play in the opening quarter. Nogues topped off AU's scoring in the first period with a triple, and AU closed out the intro up twelve, 19-7.
- In the third, Kay and Garbee added three pointers of their own and American pushed on. Only four Terriers were in scoring position before Inez Gallegos added an effort from deep and made it a ten point game, 33-23, with 1:36 to go before halftime.
- Offensively, Kay led all players in the opening half with eight points, while on defense, Bales topped everyone on the court with six rebounds.
- American, going into the locker room was up eight, leading 36-28, for just the second halftime lead of the year. Giannaros, the leading scorer for BU this season, had seven points, but only one three pointer to her stat line.
- Nogues opened the second half with a shot from deep and the Eagles found themselves up 11, 39-28, but Giannaros responded with one of her own, not letting the Terriers slip out of the contest. The Eagles then went on a 7-0 run before Giannaros, back-to-back, responded with a layup and a three pointer. AU was up eight, 46-38, with a period and a half remaining, but burned a timeout because of BU getting back into it.
- It came down to a two possession game at the end of the third, American holding on by a score of 54-50 with 10 minutes left to play thanks to Koepke finishing the frame with a driving layup over the block.
- The Terriers took their first lead of the game on a jumper from Allison Schwertner, leading by three before extending that at the free throw line, opening the final frame on an 9-1 run, up 59-55 with 6:15 to go in the contest.
- Boston took a five point lead on an Inéz Monteagudo triple with 3:29 remaining, but Kay got two free throws and a steal before Nogues dropped her third three of the game to tie it 64-all.
- Just like the last time the two programs faced off, the game came down to free throws and fouls to try and regain possession, with BU scoring four of the final six from the line, and Nogues' late three counteracting only half of that before the Terriers go the 70-67 win.
