Women’s Basketball Travels to Bucknell Saturday

WASHINGTON – American women's basketball is back out on the road to continue a busy week, slated to play Bucknell on Saturday, Jan. 11 in Sojka Pavilion. First tip between the Eagles and the Bison is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Series History
  • In the past five meetings, the Bison hold a 4-1 advantage over the Eagles. Last season, the two programs split the series, each winning in their home arena, but American dropped the ball when the two met a third time in the Patriot League first round in Lewisburg, falling 71-77.
  • In the Patriot League first round, the Bison led at the half 45-31. A second-half comeback for the Eagles, where they led in scoring 40-32, left them just short of the win. The Bison shot 53 percent from the floor.
  • Anna LeMaster led the game in points with 19, with Bucknell's Blake Matthews scoring 17 to pair with her 11 assists. LeMaster and Molly Lavin each had a double-double, LeMaster with 12 rebounds and Lavin with 10.
  • The Eagles' last win against Bucknell was on Jan. 6, 2024, besting the Bison 58-47. Down 12-6 in the first quarter, the Eagles shot 42 percent from the floor. Bailey Garbee and Bucknell's Emma Theodorsson both led in points with 13.

  • American is still looking for its first win of the season after starting 0-14, including most recently a close 70-67 loss to the Boston University Terriers on Jan. 8. Despite an early lead that they maintained through the half, the Terriers outscored the Eagles in the second half, led by Alex Giannaros with 21 points.
  • Cecilia Kay led the game with 22 points, falling just short of a double-double with nine rebounds. Junior point guard Laura Nogues scored 14 points for the Eagles.
  • Kay ranks seventh in the conference in rebounds, averaging 7.1 per game, and leads the Eagles in scoring with 10.4 points per game. Ivy Bales ranks third in the Patriot League for assist/turnover ratio with 1.9. She also has 15 steals, leading the squad in the stat, Nogues has 14.
  • The freshman forward Kay leads the team in scoring, averaging 10.4 ppg. She's third in the league in blocked shots (23).
  • Coming into the matchup with Bucknell at ninth and 11th in the Patriot League in assists per game, are Bales (3.1) and Nogues (2.9). Nogues sits at second on the team in scoring averaging, hitting 9.1 ppg followed by fellow junior Anna Rescifina (6.6). 
Scouting Bucknell
  • The Bison have a 7-7 record this season and come in with a two-game win streak, most recently beating Lafayette away 64-48 on Jan. 8. Ashley Sofilkanich led the game with 22 points, one of three Bison to score in the double digits.
  • The Bison rank fifth in the Patriot League. Sofilkanich leads the league in blocks with an average of 2.6 per game. She ranks second in the conference for points, rebounds, and field goal percentage, averaging 18.6 points, 8.5 rebounds, and a .483 percentage per game.
  • Sophia Sabino ranks fourth in the Patriot League for assists, averaging 3.5 per game. Anna Kunzwiler ranks fifth in blocks with an average of 0.9 per game.
  • Freshman guard Reese Zemitis received her second Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors on Jan. 6 after recording her first collegiate double-double, scoring 26 points in Bucknell's 1-1 week in conference play. The freshman ranks third in the league in three pointers per game (2.2).
