Sanders Scores First Career Goal in Final Minutes to Give Women's Soccer Fourth Straight Win

RICHMOND, Va. – In the final game of its non-conference slate, the American University women's soccer team rallied from a 1-0 deficit, as sophomore Lauren Sanders scored in the final moments of the game to give the Eagles a 2-1 win at Richmond.

The Eagles close the non-conference portion of the schedule with a 4-1-1 record and a four-game win streak, the first time American has won four consecutive games since 2012.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Richmond scored the only goal of the first half despite American out-shooting the Spiders 4-2.
  • Senior Jennifer McGuire scored her first career goal early in the second half to tie the game.
  • After setting up a series of chances, the Eagles notched the game-winner in the 89th minute, as Sanders scored her first career goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Richmond struck first in the first half, as a speculative shot from the Spiders in the 14th minute sailed over the head of freshman goalkeeper Addison Roemer to give the Spiders a 1-0 lead.
  • American's best chance of the first half came with four minutes remaining, as a corner kick from junior Morissa Lambert was placed perfectly on the head of senior Brooke Steel, but Steel's shot just missed the goal.
  • The Eagles came out of halftime threatening, and in the 54th minute, a cross from senior Izzy Kadzban ricocheted off of a defender right to the feet of McGuire, who was in the right place at the right time to score the game-tying goal.
  • American had several chances to score after the McGuire goal, with the best chance being a breakaway from freshman Nariah Goldman. In a one-on-one situation with Richmond's goalkeeper, Goldman's shot was saved in the 75th minute.
  • With just under two minutes to play, sophomore Lailah Stewart created some space for a dangerous left-footed shot, saved by Richmond.
  • Just seconds later, Kadzban was fouled, setting up for an American free kick. Lambert crossed the ball into the box, and after the ball took several touches, Sanders found the ball and the back of the net, scoring the game-winner.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • American out-shot Richmond 17-3, with nine shots on goal to just one for the Spiders.
  • Stewart, Kadzban, and junior Avery Klingensmith each received assists on the Eagles' two goals.
  • After graduating from American University and exercising her graduate fifth year, Abby Dillon played 44 minutes for the Spiders.
UP NEXT
  • The Eagles will have the week off before kicking off Patriot League play on the road at Army on Friday, September 20, at 5:00 p.m.
