Three First-Half Goals Highlight Third Straight Win for Women's Soccer

BALTIMORE, Md. – The American University women's soccer team won its third game in a row on Thursday night, riding three first-half goals to a 3-1 victory at UMBC. This is the first time the Eagles have won three consecutive games since 2021.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Graduate student Izzy Kadzban opened up scoring in just the seventh minute, as American took an early 1-0 lead.
  • Sophomore Lailah Stewart scored two first-half goals, picking up right where she left off in the Binghamton game as American held onto a 3-1 halftime lead.
  • Freshman Addison Roemer, the two-time defending Patriot League Women's Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week, made five saves in the first half, including one on a penalty kick that could've leveled the score at two goals apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American struck first as a pass from Stewart set Kadzban up for a rocket of a shot, fired perfectly in the top-right corner of the goal to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute.
  • UMBC responded immediately in the ninth minute with a lobbed shot that sailed perfectly over Roemer, bouncing off the crossbar and into the goal to level the score.
  • American fired right back just three minutes later, as Stewart scored thanks to a pass from senior Brooke Steel. The Eagles retook the lead in the 12th minute.
  • In the 36th minute, with UMBC threatening on a penalty kick, Roemer came through with a fantastic save to keep the Eagles in the lead.
  • Just three minutes later, Stewart scored her second goal of the half, as a corner kick from junior Morissa Lambert set up another goal for AU.
  • After a shootout in the first half, American stood firm in the second half, as Roemer made two more saves.
  • American had two promising chances early in the half as junior Phoebe Merrigan had a pair of shots on goal saved by the Retrievers.
  • American almost finished the game with a fourth goal in the final moments, but freshman Maddie Hurowitz had her shot blocked.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Stewart's two goals were the first time an Eagle has scored two goals in the same game since Alyssa Giroux scored two goals against George Washington in September 2023.
  • Stewart scored two goals with an assist, bringing her total for the season to three goals and three assists through five games.
  • Kadzban's goal was her second of the 2024 season after a scoreless 2023 season.
  • Roemer made seven saves, a career high for the freshman.

UP NEXT
  • The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday, September 8, as they make the trip to Richmond, Va., to take on the Spiders at 2:00 p.m.
