Field Hockey Shuts Out Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Earning its second shutout of the weekend on Sunday afternoon, the American University field hockey team defeated the Ivy League's Penn, 1-0, on the road. Elle Ridge scored in the third quarter to break a game that had been locked at 0-0 until then.

QUOTES FROM COACH JENNINGS
"Today was a tough match for us–Penn came out ready to go and put us on the back foot early. Fortunately, we were able to make adjustments in the second half which allowed us to get some momentum. I am really proud of the team for the resilience we showed today, and for making this a double win weekend.

"We have been working hard and to get two important shutout wins on the road speaks volumes about how we are progressing."

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Ridge's goal came at the 14 minute mark of the third quarter,  the 44th minute of the game, and was the first of the sophomore's collegiate career.
  • Each team registered five shots on goal apiece. Penn took 11 shots overall to AU's nine.
  • The Quakers took the lead in penalty corners, four of their six coming in the first quarter and two coming in the second. American didn't earn any penalty corners.
  • Goalkeeper Bryn Underwood made five saves in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Penn started out on the front foot, taking the first shots of the game; the Quakers forcing two saves from Underwood in the opening minutes.
  • The Eagles weren't on the back foot for long, making their way into their attacking circle midway through the first quarter. Despite having battled to even out possession, the Eagles didn't take any shots in the opening 15.
  • AU received a yellow card with fifteen seconds remaining in the first quarter, giving the Quakers a player-up advantage for five minutes at the top of the second.
  • Reicher fought for AU's first shot of the day, taken while still a player-down, but the attempt was saved by goalkeeper Ruby de Frees. Then, Penn was issued their own card, a green card in the 20th minute, and the teams were on even-strength, each down to 10 players.
  • Nothing would break through for either team before the halftime horn sounded, and it was a nil-nil contest at the halfway point.
  • Reicher had another good chance for American in the third, midway through the period in the 38th minute, but it skirted just outside the cage, hitting the outside post. The same situation happened to Penn in the 43rd minute, the ball knocking off the post of the cage back into play.
  • In the 44th minute, the tide turned. Ridge hammered home the Eagles' first shot on target for the day and gave them the 1-nil lead. A ball was sent into the circle by Olivia Morraye, passed by Delia Rabatin and Federica Turina Dellamaggiore before de Frees was able to make the initial stop, but Ridge was posted up in front of the goal and hit the rebound in.
  • The momentum shifted after the American goal, AU dominating possession in the final frame.
  • Ridge's goal would be the difference maker and the Eagles would win, 1-nil. AU is now an even 5-5 on the season.
