Elgersma's Spectacular Goal Leads to Tie at Colgate for Men's Soccer

HAMILTON, N.Y. –  The American University men's soccer team held the lead for most of the second half but was unable to hold on as an unrelenting Colgate attack tied the game in the closing minutes.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Junior Troy Elgersma scored his second goal of the season late in the first half, a rocket from outside the box to give American a 1-0 lead.
  • On the attack for most of the game, Colgate was able to score the equalizer in the 83rd minute.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Colgate controlled possession for most of the first half, but Elgersma took advantage of some space with an incredible shot from outside the box to give American a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute.
  • Senior Dilane Zouantcha and junior Sebastian Garces were credited with assists on the goal.
  • At halftime, Elgersma's goal was the only shot on goal for either squad.
  • Colgate had a chance to score in the 73rd minute, but graduate student Cooper Nunn did well to block the shot as junior goalkeeper Matthew Tibbetts was there to make the save.
  • With nine minutes left in the game, Colgate had another chance, but the shot sailed right into the hands of Tibbetts.
  • Still on the attack, the Raiders were able to score just a minute later, as Blake Pipkin was able to get one past Tibbetts, as the game ended in a tie.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • American recorded just three shots with one on goal in the game, as Colgate stayed on the attack for most of the contest.
  • Despite the lack of shots, American had five corner kick opportunities to just four for Colgate.
  • Elgersma's goal was the sixth of his career.

UP NEXT
  • American will be back in action in one week as the Eagles host Bucknell at the Maryland SoccerPlex on Saturday, September 28, at 7:00 p.m. for Family Day and Doug Dugan Day.
