COLLEGE PARK, Md. – For its second game in a row, the American University field hockey team scored four goals in a game, this time topping the Bald Eagles of Lock Haven, 4-1, at the Terrapin Invitational.
QUOTES FROM COACH JENNINGS
"We did a lot of positive work today–highlights were strikers getting in behind the defense and our ability to create a lot of fast break opportunities. Our connection is still a work in progress, but the team is working hard, and we are happy to build on last weekend.
"We have a quick turnaround to face one of the best teams in the country in No. 3 UVA and we know we will have to bring our 'A' game on Sunday."
QUICK NOTABLES
- Sophomore Emma Guydish scored the first goal of her collegiate career while classmate Jordan Reicher notched her third and fourth goals of the season. Reicher also added an assist to her line on the stat sheet.
- Alyssa Freeman registered her first assist of the season, earned on Reicher's second goal that came late in the third period. Federica Turina Dellamaggiore is hitting her stride this season, registering her second goal of the season.
- Goalkeeper Pauline Gineste saw her first action in the cage as an Eagle after missing her first to seasons due to injury, checking in for AU in the final quarter.
- American had a 14-1 advantage in shots and an 11-1 advantage in shots on goal. They also had a 2-1 advantage in penalty corners.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game started fast; it was 22 seconds into the contest when Reicher's backhanded shot sailed into the top right corner of the cage and put the Eagles up 1-nil over Lock Haven. The goal was Reicher's third of the season.
- Though AU maintained a majority of the possession in the first quarter and took another two shots on frame, the Eagles were unable to break through LHU's defense.
- Midway through the second quarter, AU earned the first penalty corner for either team in the game. Taken by Reicher, Sophie Willemse's slapshot was saved by Lock Haven's goalkeeper Kelsey Felix, but the rebound found Guydish who redirected and slipped it around Felix to put the Eagles up 2-nil.
- That two goal lead would hold through the remainder of the half.
- Coming out of the break, the possession was more even between the teams. The Bald Eagles were forcing AU back into its defensive third.
- In the 40th minute, American was awarded a penalty stroke, but Felix's diving save would keep AU from tacking on another goal and building upon its lead.
- As the clock wound down in the third period, Ashley Huddleston ran the ball down the right flank and sent it in to Agustina Roffo. Roffo would shovel the ball into the circle where it found Freeman who would connect with Reicher who, posted in front of the cage, would tip it in around Felix to send the Eagles up 3-nil over the Bald Eagles with 20 seconds to play in the quarter.
- Lock Haven's first shot on goal in the game leads to a goal, in the 49th minute of the game, denying Bryn Underwood of her second clean sheet of the season.
- Reicher controlled the ball into the circle and sent an over-the-shoulder pass to Turina Dellamaggiore right in front of the cage. Turina Dellamaggiore would skirt the new Lock Haven keeper, Maja Halasz, and chip it over to tally her goal in 54th minute giving the Eagles their 4-1 lead.
- The Eagles would hold onto their lead for the remainder of the game and claim their second win of the season, and second consecutive four goal came.
