WASHINGTON – The American University men's basketball team has announced its 2024 non-conference schedule, highlighted by a home matchup with city rival George Washington, road trips to ACC opponents North Carolina and Virginia, and an invite to the Puerto Rico Clasico.
 
"We're really excited about our non-conference schedule," head coach Duane Simpkins said. "We've got some tough competition: two ACC teams, three Atlantic 10 teams, one of whom we're going to host at Bender Arena, and obviously, going to Puerto Rico. We can't wait to see our Eagles fans come out to watch some exciting basketball."
 
American will play host to four non-conference games and one exhibition, including a preseason exhibition game against Howard on Oct. 28, a Nov. 10 home opener against Harvard, a Dec. 1 tilt with Notre Dame of Maryland University, a Dec. 4 game against George Washington and a Dec. 29 contest with UMBC.
 
American's season opener will see the Eagles travel to Philadelphia for a matchup with La Salle on Nov. 4 in what will be the first game played at the new John Glaser Arena at TruMark Financial Center.
 
After a Nov. 12 game at Siena, the Eagles will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to play the University of North Carolina. Assistant coach Jackie Manuel will return to UNC, where he was an NCAA champion in 2005 as a player and has also worked on the Tar Heels' staff. The Tar Heels were a No. 1 seed in the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
 
The Eagles will stay in North Carolina for a Nov. 18 matchup with High Point, who finished the 2023-24 season with a 27-9 record.
 
American will play in the 2024 Puerto Rico Clasico from November 22-24, with games against Albany, UMKC, and the University of Puerto Rico. Fan packages are available and include a four-night stay from Nov. 21-25 at the Royal Sonesta, admission to all three days of Clasico games, and an event t-shirt.
 
After a brief Thanksgiving break, the Eagles will return to host Notre Dame of Maryland University at Bender Arena on Dec. 1, before hosting D.C. rival George Washington on Dec. 4.
 
American will return to the court two weeks later to take on St. Joseph's in Philadelphia, Pa., on Dec. 18.
 
In its last game before a holiday break, American will take on the 2019 NCAA champions, Virginia, in Charlottesville, Va., on Dec. 22.
 
One week later, the Eagles will round out the non-conference slate with a home game against UMBC.
 
The Patriot League will announce the league schedule later this summer.
