Lacrosse Unable to Overcome Colgate’s Second-Half Surge

WASHINGTON – Though each side kept an even pace through the first half, the American University lacrosse team was unable to stymie Colgate's offensive efforts in the second half of a 13-7 Patriot League loss. American outpaced Colgate in shots, 31-24, but Colgate managed to make the most of its shots with 23 being put on goal.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • American sophomore Reagan Murdoch led the Eagles' offensive efforts with three goals with eight shots on goal, giving her 25 goals on the season. She added two ground balls and caused one turnover in the effort.
  • Senior Hannah Spease added a goal on her two shots on goal. She also collected two draw controls through the game.
  • Sophomore Annabelle Jackson scored a goal, her sixth of the season, with three shots on goal. She also earned her second draw control of the season.
  • Junior Alyssa Apuzzo also added a goal, her 10th of the year, while collecting two ground balls.
  • Junior Becca Frank added her 18th goal of the season while scoring once on four shots on goal, two of which came on free position opportunities. She also collected a pair of ground balls.
  • Junior Maddy Spratt assisted in the scoring efforts with an assist while she also collected two ground balls and a draw control.
  • Junior Caleigh Forti collected nine saves while allowing 11. Junior Lexi Rakis came in during the fourth quarter and recorded a save while allowing in two goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Each side played to a stalemate through the first 4:45 before Colgate broke through for the first score of the match while a man-up.
  • American evened the score nearly three minutes later with Jackson's fifth goal of the season.
  • Colgate was able to retake the lead, 2-1, with 6:55 remaining in the first on a free position shot. With 21 seconds left in the frame, though, American was able to even the score with Spratt finding the goal, courtesy an assist from Solis.
  • The second quarter started much the same as the first as neither side's defensive efforts relented until Colgate was able to find the net to take a 3-2 lead with 8:03 remaining.
  • American was able to knot the score, again, as Murdoch scored on a free position opportunity with 5:48 remaining.
  • Both sides continued to trade shots through the remaining minutes with Colgate scoring with 3:37 left before American's Apuzzo evened the score, 4-4, with 32 seconds left. Colgate, however, was able to find the net one final time with one second remaining to take a 5-4 lead into halftime.
  • The Eagles earned the first goal of the second half 5:38 into the frame with Murdoch scoring on a free position for her 23rd goal for the season.
  • The momentum for the remainder of the third quarter shifted to Colgate two goals in the next two minutes before scoring once with 3:23 left and two in the final 25 seconds to take a 10-5 lead heading into the final quarter.
  • The Eagles' Spease was able to cut off Colgate's streak of goals just over a minute into the fourth quarter with Spratt assisting on the goal.
  • After nearly eight minutes of contested defensive efforts, Colgate was able to find the net again for its 11th goal of the day with 5:57 remaining.
  • American's Frank answered the call for the Eagles, though, and scored her 15th goal of the season. However, it would be American's final goal of the day.
  • Colgate capped off the game with two more goals in quick succession with just under two minutes remaining.
NEXT UP
American goes on the road to face off with Lafayette on Wednesday, March 27, in the heart of its Patriot League schedule. The Eagles return home to face Holy Cross on Saturday, March 30, for a noon game.
