EASTON, Pa. – Scoring 12 of the game's final 14 goals, the American University lacrosse team dominated in the second half to get its first Patriot League victory, 12-5 at Lafayette on Wednesday night. Seven different players scored for the Eagles, who allowed just a single goal in the final two quarters.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Junior goalkeeper Lexi Rakis got the start and the complete-game win for American, the first of her career, recording a career-high 12 saves to more than double her total saves this season.
- Junior Becca Frank, sophomore Annabelle Jackson, sophomore Reagan Murdoch, senior Hannah Spease and junior Maddy Spratt all scored twice for American.
- Frank, who scored both the first and last goals for the Eagles in the game, also posted two assists for a team-high four points.
- Spease and fellow senior Lizzie de Guzman each totaled three points as Spease added an assist to two goals and De Guzman added a goal to two assists.
- After hitting 100 career draw controls in AU's last game, Spease added six more in this one to lead all players in the game.
- Sophomore Kellie Linehan put up one goal for AU and led the team with two caused turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- American had to overcome a slow start as Lafayette struck first in the opening minute and went on to lead 3-0.
- With less than 20 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Frank took a pass from Linehan to put AU on the board, and it was nearly all Eagles from there.
- By the midway point of the second quarter, American used the momentum to tie the score at 3-3.
- Spratt scored her first goal of the last five games to get the Eagles within a goal, and Murdoch scored off an assist from De Guzman to complete the second-quarter run.
- AU trailed again by a goal with 5:53 remaining in the opening half, but the 20th goal of the season for Spease made it 4-4 and that score stood through halftime.
- The third and fourth quarters were dominated by American. The Eagles' four goals in the third doubled up their opponent 8-4, and they added another four goals in the fourth.
- Rakis needed to make just two saves in the third and got both as the action stayed largely on the offensive end of the field for AU. She added three more saves in the fourth, allowing only a single goal.
- Up through goal number seven, every scorer was different for the Eagles. De Guzman was the first to score in the third quarter off an assist from Spease, and the 4-0 third-quarter run also included tallies from Linehan and Murdoch on free-position opportunities as well as a goal by Jackson off a great series of passes from Spratt and Frank.
- Every goal in the fourth quarter was someone's second, as Spease, Frank, Jackson and Spratt all added to their goal tallies. The pace of scoring was a frenetic one early on, with AU's first three fourth-quarter goals all coming in a minute and 15 seconds.
