Lacrosse Unable to Hold Off Siena's Offense

WASHINGTON – Despite going up 3-0 early, the American University lacrosse team couldn't keep up with Siena, falling by a final score of 13-9 on Saturday afternoon. The two teams were back and forth the whole contest, except for the third period in which the Saints went on a dominant 4-0 run.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Junior attacker Becca Frank carried the Eagles offensively, scoring three goals on six shots for the contest.
  • Sophomore attacker Kellie Linehan and senior midfielder Hannah Spease would also contribute two goals each, with Linehan also recording an assist on Frank's first goal. Spease would also pick up a team-leading five draw controls. She's now just two away from 100 total in her career.
  • Junior Alyssa Apuzzo and sophomore Reagan Murdoch rounded out American's scorers with a goal apiece. Murdoch also had a caused turnover and a ground ball.
  • Defensively, senior Jordan Mitchell led with two caused turnovers and two ground balls while Jenna Walls marked up against Siena's leading scorer, Grace Dobrzysnki, and held her to just one goal through the entire contest.
  • For Siena, Meghan Decker and Rebecca Gilhooley each recorded a hat trick.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American got off to a quick start with Linehan putting the Eagles on the board first off of a free position shot just 33 seconds into the game. Frank added two quick goals of her own to give American an early 3-0 advantage at the 12:17 mark in the first quarter.
  • Siena responded with a 3-0 run of its own, tying the game with 7:21 left in the quarter.
  • Apuzzo answered right back less than a minute later to put American back ahead, 4-3, after driving inside and shooting the ball over the back of her shoulder and past the Siena keeper.
  • The Saints would finish the quarter with two more goals to take a slim 5-4 advantage 15 minutes in.
  • After a quick goal from Siena barely a minute into the second period, the teams settled into a defensive stalemate with neither side scoring over the next thirteen minutes of play.
  • The stalemate would be broken by Spease finding the back of the net with 1:58 left in the half. The Saints, though, would answer back with 50 seconds left to carry a 7-5 lead into the intermission.
  • Siena controlled the pace of play out of the break. The Saints held strong defensively to keep the Eagles off the board while scoring four goals in the quarter to take a 11-5 lead into the final frame.
  • Frank would complete her hat trick a minute and a half into the fourth to get American back within five.
  • The Saints responded, but just as quickly Linehan secured her second goal of the game to make the score 12-7 with 11:23 left to play.
  • Murdoch got on the board eight minutes later, narrowing Siena's lead further to 12-8 with 3:10 left to try to mount a comeback.
  • It would be too little too late, however. Siena added a goal with American's net empty, and Spease would answer with one last push for the Eagles, but the Saints proved victorious by a final score of 13-9.
