Men’s Basketball Fails to Keep up with Terriers

WASHINGTON – The American University men's basketball team couldn't mount a comeback after going down double digits early to the Boston University Terriers. American fell by a final score of 67-52.

Notable Numbers
  • Freshman Matt Mayock led the Eagles in scoring with 12 points. Mayock shot 4-8 from deep, and all of his points came from behind the three-point line.
  • Seniors Lincoln Ball and Matt Rogers tied for the team lead in rebounds with six apiece. Ball was also in double digits for scoring with 10 points.
  • For the Terriers, Anthony Morales led the way with a game-high 17 points. Miles Brewster also finished with 16 points on 6-8 shooting, including 4-5 from behind the arc.
  • Boston shot 44 percent from the field for the game, outpacing American's 35 percent.
  • American is now tied for third in the Patriot League with Lehigh with an 8-7 conference record (14-14 overall).
First Half
  • After a slow start offensively for both teams, senior Lorenzo Donadio got the first points for American five minutes into the game to make the score 4-2 in favor of Boston University.
  • Despite a strong defensive showing, the Eagles' offense continued to struggle, allowing the Terriers to amass a 15-3 run and take a 19-5 lead with 7:55 left in the first half.
  • With the end of the half approaching, American finally started to find its groove offensively, ending the half on a 9-0 scoring run with Rogers and Mayock both recording three pointers, with Mayock's being his second of the game.
  • After trailing by as many as 17, the run cut the Terriers' lead to single digits with American trailing 26-18 at the half.
  • Boston University shot 38% for the half compared to 25% for American.
Second Half
  • American continued its momentum to start the second half, making four of its first five shots on layups from four different scorers, further dwindling Boston's lead to five in the process. Boston led 32-27 with 17:04 left to play.
  • Boston responded with a 14-2 run of its own, pushing its lead back to 17, eight minutes into the half.
  • After BU went up by 22, its largest lead of the game, American dug deep to try to give itself a chance. The Eagles went on a 10-0 run, bookended by Mayock's third and fourth threes of the game to get the game back within 12, trailing 54-42 with 6:48 still to play.
  • The Eagles would be unable to get any closer the rest of the game, ultimately losing by a final score of 67-52.
  • While American shot a much improved 45% for the second half, Boston still outshot the Eagles making 50% from the field.
