Towson Tops Women’s Hoops in Local Matchup

TOWSON, Md. – From the jump the Eagles of the American University women's basketball team struggled when Towson jumped out to an early lead midway through the first period. The Tiger's aggressiveness on the court would prove too much for the Eagles, and AU would fall, 89-62.

Inside the Box Score
  • Molly Driscoll led for American for the second game in a row with her 14 points. The freshman also had seven rebounds and two assists.
  • Cecilia Kay topped out with 12 points on 4-for-9 shooting. She and Ivy Bales led American on the boards with nine rebounds each.
  • Bales and Laura Nogues each finished with 10 points. In addition to Bales' rebounds, she also had four assists and three steals. Nogues also went 4-for-9 from the floor, including two triples.
  • AU shot 30 percent from the floor in the game while TU went 47 percent across the contest. The Tigers shot a whopping 53 percent in the final frame.
  • American committed 19 personal fouls to Towson's 16 and doubled the number of Towson's turnovers with 24.
  • Four Tigers were in double-digit scoring position and Khady Leye secured a double-double with her 18 points and 10 rebounds, leading all players on the court in both stats.
How it Happened
  • Kay and Driscoll were the first on the board for AU, with a basket and then three free throws respectively, but after that, Towson went on a 19-0 run, leading 21-5 with 2:30 to play the opening quarter.
  • Lexi Salazar was the first Eagle to score in over five and a half minutes, draining a long three point jumper before Bales sank her own mid-range jumper to make it 23-10 with 1:01 to play. Through one, the Tigers were up 25-12.
  • In the first two minutes of the second, the Tigers only managed to score once on the Eagles, only adding two to their total, but still were holding onto their sizeable lead, up 30-16, over AU four minutes into the frame.
  • At halftime, TU was up 50-27, a sizeable lead for AU to try and surmount in the second half. American has been prone to second-half comebacks so far this season, but none of them so far have been enough to grasp a win.
  • In the first half, Towson was outshooting American 49 percent to 29 percent. Neither team was doing great from beyond the arc though, TU with four triples from 14 attempts and AU with two from 12.
  • At the media timeout in the third quarter, with half a period to play, American was down 25 with Towson leading 58-33. Driscoll was leading AU with 12 points and Bales had eight. The Tigers opened the quarter shooting 40 percent from the floor and American was shooting 33 percent.
  • American went on a 9-2 run to close out the third period, down 61-42, cutting into the deficit a bit and holding momentum into the final frame. Nogues made AU's only three of the period during the run, the team struggling, 3-for-16, from distance at that point in the game.
  • With four minutes to play, Towson was holding its lead, up 77-49 with half a frame to go and shooting 67 percent from the floor in the first five minutes of the final period, upping their game percentage to 48 percent. American opened the fourth shooting 30 percent and was at 31 percent from the game.
  • The Tigers would improve their shooting a 53 percent in the final frame, collecting a game-leading 28 points in the quarter to claim the 89-62 point victory over American.
