Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Hoops Drops Road Battle at Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Lights out shooting from Laura Nogues to open the game, and her 18 points wouldn't be enough to see the Eagles of the American University women's basketball team past the Hawks of Monmouth, and AU would fall 64-51 on the road.

Inside the Box Score
  • Nogues opened the game on 5-for-5 shooting, including 3-for-3 from three, within the first five minutes of the contest. The junior point guard finished with 18 points. Ultimately, she went 7-for-10 overall and 4-for-6 from three point range. She led all players on the court in scoring.
  • Graduate student Ivy Bales finished two points shy of a double-double, capping off the contest with eight points and 10 rebounds. The guard also had two assists and two steals
  • American shot 40 from three and 35 overall in the contest to Monmouth's 30 percent and 37 percent. The Hawks were led by Taisha Exanor with 13 points, and Ella Farrelly had 12 rebounds.
  • Monmouth scored 22 points from AU's 21 turnovers and led in both bench points, 19-11, and points in the paint, 28-16.
How it Happened
  • Scoring the first five baskets for the Eagles was Nogues. At the media timeout, AU was on top, 13-12, Eagles leading the Hawks, all of the American points coming from Nogues who, at the 4:34 mark, was 5-for-5 overall and 3-for-3 from three. She also had a rebound and a steal.
  • After that, AU went into a 4:13 scoring drought while Monmouth went on a 7-0 run before it was snapped by Cecilia Kay making a driving layup, a minute left to play in the opening frame.
  • To close out the first, AU found themselves down 19-15; Pingree led all players with four rebounds at that point.
  • Nogues with her sixth basket from her sixth attempt of the contest brought AU back within one, down 22-21, three minutes into the second period.
  • Molly Driscoll got involved in the scoring, giving AU back the lead with 5:33 left in the half on a three pointer. Followed by a Lexi Salazar triple two minutes later.
  • Salazar would drain another three pointer with 30 seconds remaining in the half. She was 2-for-3 from the floor and from beyond the arc. American was down two, 32-30, at the halftime break. The Eagles shot 48 percent overall and 55 percent from three in the first half.
  • Coming out of the break, the Hawks were trapping Nogues, limiting her mobility on the court, but it didn't stop her. The junior drained another triple, her fourth from four attempts, within the first 90 seconds of the third period. Bales scored another for AU a minute later, American shooting 62 percent from deep.
  • With 4:21 remaining in the penultimate period, the teams were tied 40-all. And two minutes later, Nogues was charged with her fourth foul and would be limited on the floor from then on out. American, thanks to a three pointer taken by Kay as time expired in the period, held a narrow, 46-43, lead.
  • With 6:36 left to play, the Eagles found themselves down by five, 53-48. It was the Hawks' largest lead of the game, and with 5:14 to go, the lead had extended to 11 points, Hawks up 59-48.
  • The lead that the Hawks amounted would be too much for the Eagles to surmount, and AU would fall 64-51 on the road in New Jersey.
