ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Eagles posted three pins in a strong performance, but it wasn't quite enough at Navy as the American University wrestling team came up short 24-21 against the Midshipmen. The loss, which came in the first EIWA dual of the season, snapped a four-match win streak for AU.
Notable
- Junior Raymond Lopez continued his hot streak at 133 pounds and improved to 5-0 in dual meets this season with his impressive sixth pin of the season. Lopez got the job down in 6:05 against Brendan Ferretti after scoring three takedowns and turning the final one into a fall.
- Lopez improved to 8-1 overall for the season, and his 12 career wins by fall are tied for 15th all-time at American.
- The Eagles got their second pin at 184 pounds as Lucas White made quick work of Zyan Hall in 1:05. Hall scored an almost immediate takedown after the first period began, but White turned it around with an escape, takedown, and a pin in just over a minute. It was the second win by fall for White this season, who improved his record to 3-3.
- Will Jarrell went into his heavyweight match with the team scoring already decided in favor of Navy, but nonetheless turned in another strong performance. Jarrell bided his time and trailed 4-1 against Payton Thomas before turning a single-leg takedown into a fall with 18 seconds left in the second period.
- The pin is the fourth of the season for Jarrell, who is now alone in 11th place all-time at AU with 18 career pins.
- American got a fourth win in the dual from redshirt freshman Gage Owen at 149 pounds. Owen added four back points midway through the third period to seal up a high-scoring, 16-10 win against Kaeman Smith.
- The result was a solid turnaround from a year ago when the Eagles lost 38-0 to Navy in Bender Arena.
Thoughts from Coach Borrelli
- We continue to be all over the place in terms of consistency from individual wrestlers. Once we get that figured out, we will be in good shape as a team.
- This group has a lot of potential and we are getting closer and closer each time we compete. We have been hammering home the idea of being aggressive and always focusing on next points. The guys that won did that well today.
- In the matches that got away from us, we had a very hard time generating our offensive attacks and we got beat bad in the hand fight. We need to do better there and will get to work on that tomorrow in the practice room.
- I'm not much for consolation prizes, but it's nice to see year-to-year progress after losing to that same program 38-0 last year in our gym.
