WASHINGTON – Despite going ahead, 1-0, in the 51st minute, No. 2 seeded Lafayette leveled the game four minutes later and forced overtime with the No. 1 seeded American University field hockey team in the Patriot League Championship game. In the first period of golden goal overtime, the Leopards would claim the, 2-1, victory over the Eagles.
Quick Notables
- Agustina Roffo's fourth quarter goal was her third in the previous three games against Lafayette and lands her as the season leader for the Eagles with eight goals on the year. The senior midfielder finished the season with 16 points.
- Katelyn Bailey and Sophie Willemse got the assist on Roffo's goal. Willemse earned her fourth assist to cap off her sophomore season with 10 points.
- Roffo and Willemse both earned spots on the All-Tournament Team alongside senior defender Tayla-Jade Weiss, who's defensive efforts anchored the back line for the Eagles in both games.
How It Happened
The two teams played a scoreless first three quarters–much like the Eagles' semifinal game against Boston U. two days prior.
Through the first three frames, the Eagles took nine shots to Lafayette's six and earned two corners while Lafayette tallied six.
In the final frame, with nine minutes to play, American earned its third and final penalty corner. Off the insert from
Sarah Steinman, Roffo was able to redirect a sweep from Willemse into the top of the goal and give AU a 1-0 advantage as the clock ticked down.
Four minutes later, the Leopards earned a penalty stroke and were able to capitalize, putting the ball into the cage to level things 1-all with five minutes to go.
Unable to find an answer in regulation, the contest went to overtime, the Eagles' fifth game to go to extra time this year, including their first double overtime contest against Lafayette earlier in the season.
On a penalty corner in the 64th minute, the Leopards took the victory and championship title, earning their first win over the Eagles since 2018 and their first PL title since 2012.
