No. 3 Men’s Soccer to Host No. 6 Loyola Maryland in PL Quarterfinal Saturday

WASHINGTON – The American University men's soccer team will begin its bid for the Patriot League title at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9. The No. 3 Eagles will host No. 6 Loyola Maryland at Montgomery College in Rockville, Md. American enters the tournament ranked second in goals with 22, with the Greyhounds tied for eighth with 17.

  • Tickets, available HERE, are $10 for adults and $7 for youth (4-14) and Senior (65+).
  • AU undergraduate, graduate & WCL students receive free admission to Saturday's quarterfinal match with valid AU ID.
Series History
  • The all-time series has Loyola Maryland with a 30-18-7 lead over American.
  • AU won earlier this season at home, 2-0, but the Greyhounds have a 3-1-1 advantage over the last five games. 
  • The teams last met in the postseason in the fall of 2021, in the championship game. Loyola won the title with a 2-1 victory.
What to Know About American
  • The Eagles are coming off a 3-1 win against Navy on Nov. 5, earning them the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament.
  • Junior forward Troy Elgersma was named the 2024 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year. He was joined on the All-PL First Team by senior Cooper Nunn, while senior Sam Hershey and grad student Ethan Boyle were named to the All-PL Second Team.
  • Sebastian Garces, Elgersma, and Hershey scored for the Eagles against Navy, with Garces scoring the first goal 24 seconds into the second half.
  • Hershey scored on a penalty kick for American in the 84th minute, regaining the Eagles' two-goal lead after the Mids scored in the 67th minute.
  • The Eagles faced Loyola earlier this season, winning 2-0 on Sept. 14 with goals from Elgersma and Hershey.
  • Tibbetts is second in the Patriot League for shutouts with four. Tibbetts is also second in the league for saves with 65.
  • Hershey ranks in the top 10 in the Patriot League for goals after scoring four times in 17 games. Troy Elgersma leads the league in assists (6) and shots (38).
  • The Eagles are second in the Patriot League for goals, with 22 goals in 17 games.
  • American has appeared in three of the last four Patriot League Tournament championship contests, with a win in spring 2021. Last year, AU lost in penalty kicks in a quarterfinal at Lafayette.
What to Know About Loyola Maryland
  • Junior midfielder Sean McEvoy was named to the All-PL First Team, while senior defender Jordy Luchies earned All-PL Second Team honors and junior forward Caden Stafford was named to the All-PL Third Team.
  • The Greyhounds tied Bucknell 0-0 on Nov. 5, securing the No. 6 seed in the Patriot League Tournament. Each team had two shots on goal and two saves.
  • Before that, Loyola tied Army 2-2 on Nov. 1, with McEvoy and sophomore Tyler Tucker scoring for the Greyhounds. They maintained a 2-1 lead until the 80th minute.
  • Junior goalkeeper Dylan van der Walt ranks fourth in the Patriot League in saves per game, with 53 saves in 16 games (an average of 3.31 per game).
  • Junior defender Pat Kakayira leads the Patriot League in assists per game with four assists in nine games (an average of .444 per game). Kakayira was also named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 21 after posting two assists in the Greyhounds' 4-1 win over Lehigh.
  • Loyola has appeared in six Patriot League Tournaments beginning in 2016, with a win in fall 2021.
