Men's Basketball Falters in Second Half at 10th-Ranked North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Despite a promising start, the American University men's basketball team could not keep up with the 10th-ranked Tar Heels of North Carolina, falling 107-55 after a tough second half. UNC shot 59 percent from the field and hit seven second-half three-pointers. 
 
Notable Numbers
  • Matt Rogers hit 5-of-11 field goals including two treys for a team-high 15 points, also leading AU in rebounds with seven.
  • Scoring 10 points in a strong first half for AU was Elijah Stephens, who finished with 12 and hit 2-of-4 shots from long range.
  • Greg Jones made three of his five attempts from the field for six points.
  • In all, 11 different players scored for the Eagles, who shot 52 percent in the first half but just 14.7 percent in the second.
First Half
  • The Eagles hit four of their first six attempts from beyond the arc, getting two of those from Rogers.
  • Rogers' second trey was part of an 8-2 run capped by a Lincoln Ball jumper at 12:36 that gave AU its largest lead of five points, 18-13.
  • UNC came back to lead just past the 10-minute mark, and although AU never regained an advantage, the Eagles were able to stay within two possessions until the final four minute of the half.
  • With a three from Stephens at 1:18, it was back to a seven-point margin.
  • The Tar Heels hit the final bucket with five seconds left to take a 43-34 lead into the break.
  • AU hit six first-half three-pointers while UNC went 0-for-6, but the Tar Heels had a 28-8 lead in points in the paint.
Second Half
  • American was still within striking distance for the first five minutes of the second half after a three-point play from freshman Eric Michaels put the Eagles within 12, but they would get no closer.
  • The threes began to fall for the Tar Heels, who quickly widened the gap and used an 18-2 run to surge well ahead.
  • With 8:14 to go, it was a 30-point lead for UNC.
  • The final score matched the Tar Heels' largest lead of the game.
