WASHINGTON – American University women's basketball fell to the visiting Longwood Lancers, 59-41, Wednesday night in Bender Arena. Neither the Eagles nor the Lancers really managed to lock in offensively, but full court press from the jump and an abundance of shots put up by Longwood let them control the game.
Inside the Box Score
- Freshman forward Cecilia Kay finished a second consecutive game with double digit rebounds (10), as well as scoring eight points. She also tallied four blocks and a steal.
- Classmates Molly Driscoll and Elizabeth Archer each scored eight points along with Kay. Archer pulled down six rebounds while Driscoll had three, along with two assists and a steal.
- Grace Koepke, a sophomore guard, finished with six points and six rebounds.
- Longwood's Otaifo Esenabhalu led all players on the court with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
How It Happened
- A considerable even first frame had the Eagles forcing poor shots from the Lancers, and by the midway point of the opening ten minutes, Longwood had only made 2-for-11 from the floor for 18 percent shooting. AU had gone 4-for-7 by the same time, up 8-5.
- From there on out though, it was all Lancers. The first quarter ended without the Eagles scoring again and Longwood surging, up 16-8 at the end of the opening quarter.
- Despite flashes of bright from the Eagles, like two drained three pointers–one at the end of the second period and coming midway through the fourth–from Archer, and four blocks from Kay.
- Each team scored 15 points in the second quarter, and while American was scoring the squad was unable to get a stop on the defensive end and recover the deficit.
- The third period was a drag though, neither team scoring over ten points. Longwood with nine and American earning just six.
- In the final frame, the Lancers and the Eagles picked back up offensively, American grinding out 12 points in the period, but AU couldn't recover the deficit when Longwood scored 19 in the frame and the Eagles dropped the contest 59-41.
From Head Coach Coll
"As disappointing as this is, and we are all disappointed, it's still a learning experience from us and I think certain people really grew from this game. We're going to learn how to be poised on a pivot through pressure, that's the number one thing, and play selfless. Play team basketball."
