WASHINGTON - In an even split of 5-5 for individual bouts won, it was bonus points that made the difference for American University wrestling in a 19-18 win over Clarion on Sunday evening in Bender Arena. Both teams had one person earn six points with a pin, but the Eagles also had a major decision for the difference in the final score.

Notable

• With American trailing 15-13 and two bouts to go, redshirt sophomore Liam Volk-Klos was the hero of the day for the Eagles with a win by fall against Connor Jacobs. 
• Volk-Klos was up to an 11-0 lead after getting four near fall points, and turned it into a pin as time expired in the second period. It was the eighth career pin for Volk-Klos, and it gave the Eagles a four-point lead which proved crucial after Clarion scored three in the final bout.
• The dual got off to a good start at 125 for the Eagles with redshirt freshman Coen Bainey getting a second-period takedown and escape to hold on for a 4-3 win over Weston Pisarchick.
• An early takedown for senior Shamil Kalmatov at 133, and another in the second period, helped him earn a 9-6 win to give AU a 6-0 lead.
• Two close losses at 141 and 149 had the teams tied up heading into the 157-pound weight class, and redshirt senior Jack Nies made it exciting against Alejandro Herrera-Rondon.
• Nies trailed 3-0 after two periods and 4-0 early in the third before a takedown and a stalling call on Clarion evened the score at 4-4 right near the end of regulation. In sudden victory, Nies scored a takedown 42 seconds in for a 7-4 decision.
• Sophomore Kaden Milheim kept the excitement going with a major decision win at 165, coming out with a 13-1 victory over John Altieri thanks to two takedowns, a reversal, and four near fall points.
• Clarion took three of the final four bouts of the night, but the pin by Volk-Klos was enough to secure the team win for the Eagles, 19-18.
