Volleyball Sweeps Holy Cross for Fifth Straight Win

WASHINGTON - The match was a quick one for American University volleyball as the Eagles swept visiting Holy Cross by scores of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-17. AU posted 43 kills to the Crusaders' 22 and won its fifth straight match to improve to 18-4 overall and 8-2 in the Patriot League.

Notable
  • For the 10th time this season, freshman Zedo Yilmaz recorded a double-double with 11 digs to go with a match-high 13 kills. Yilmaz, who hit .250, was the only player in the match with 10 or more kills.
  • The Eagles got a huge spark from sophomore Holly Hopkins, who subbed in for seven kills and nine digs, hitting .300.
  • Sophomore Sofia Osterdahl hit .375 with eight kills, and freshman Elise Sterling hit .333 with six kills.
  • Senior setter Esma Sipahi added six digs and four blocks to 34 assists, while senior Lilou Stegeman matched Sipahi for match-high honors with four blocks.
  • Tying for the team-high in digs with Yilmaz was senior Bridget Javitch, who also posted 11.
  • Freshman libero Bella Marrero added eight digs to three service aces and was the only Eagle to serve up an ace in the win.
How it Happened
  • In the opening set, AU hit .345 while Holy Cross went .000 with seven kills and seven errors. Yilmaz led the way with five kills on nine attempts with zero errors.
  • Sterling was 3-for-3 in the first set, with her second giving American set-point, and the third finding the floor for the set win as AU ended it 25-17.
  • The second set was close at the midway point as Holy Cross pulled within one at 15-14, but the Crusaders scored just a single point the rest of the way.
  • American closed out the set on a 10-1 run with kills from four different players, including Osterdahl who ended it at 25-15. The Eagles hit .225 in the second, while Holy Cross finished with more errors than kills.
