Volleyball Heads to Lehigh on Friday, Returns Home to Host Army on Saturday Night

WASHINGTON - Ten regular season matches remain for American University volleyball, and six of those will be played at home in Bender Arena. This week, the Eagles head to Lehigh for a 6 p.m. match on Friday, Oct. 11, before returning home to host Army West Point at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Concessions at Bender Arena
Throughout the 2024 volleyball season, Gregorio's Trattoria will once again be providing food concessions at all home volleyball matches in Bender Arena.
  • Fans can enjoy Gregorio's favorites including menu selections of pizza, chicken fingers, hot dogs, chips, desserts and more, as well as a full selection of refreshing Pepsi products.
  • Credit cards and EagleBuck$ are accepted.
  • NO outside food or beverages are permitted into Bender Arena.
Inside the Series
  • The all-time series between AU and Army has the Eagles leading 45-12, but the Black Knights won both meetings in 2022 and both regular season meetings in 2023.
  • American got the one that counted most, beating Army in straight sets in the 2023 Patriot League Championship semifinals hosted by Colgate.
  • The Black Knights earned a 3-1 decision on Sept. 23, 2023 in West Point, and came back from a two-set deficit to beat the Eagles in five sets on Nov. 4, 2023 in D.C.
  • The all-time series against Lehigh has American leading 41-7, with the Eagles winning eight in a row dating back to 2018.
  • The Mountain Hawks last defeated AU on Nov. 6, 2018, beating the Eagles in straight sets in DC.
  • The Eagles are currently tied for third place in the Patriot League at 4-2 with Loyola Maryland. Army and Lehigh are tied for fifth at 3-3, but Army is coming off a huge, four-set upset of Colgate on Oct. 6.
What to Know About American
  • All four of American's Patriot League wins so far have come in straight sets, with the Eagles also suffering losses to the top two teams in the standings—Bucknell and Colgate.
  • Freshman outside hitter Zedo Yilmaz earned four of the first five Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors (Sept. 3, Sept. 17, Sept. 24, Oct. 1). She is among the PL leaders in points (2nd, 4.04 per set), and kills (3rd, 3.43 per set).
  • Freshman middle blocker Elise Sterling took the only PL Rookie honor not won by Yilmaz in the first five weeks (Sept. 10). Junior outside hitter Adelina Berisha made it a PL sweep on Sept. 17, earning her first-ever Player of the Week honor.
  • Senior middle blocker Lilou Stegeman ranks second in the PL with a hitting percentage of .376, and ranks ninth with 0.93 blocks per set. 
  • Senior setter Esma Sipahi, the 2023 PL Setter of the Year and 2024 PL Preseason Setter of the Year, passed the 2,000-assist milestone in a win vs. UC Riverside on Aug. 31, and now ranks eighth all-time in program history with 2,566 assists. Her 9.71 assists per set lead the Patriot League.
  • Senior libero Bridget Javitch passed the 1,000-dig milestone during AU's weekend at the Campbell Invitational, and now ranks 10th all-time in program history with 1,061 digs.
  • American is leading the Patriot League in hitting percentage (.238), and assists per set (12.12).
  • It's a very young group on the court for the Eagles in 2024 under second-year head coach Ahen Kim, with seven freshmen and five sophomores among the total roster number of 16.
  • The team has a large international presence with three student-athletes from Turkey, two from Hungary and one from Sweden.
