WASHINGTON - The first match back in Bender Arena after a lengthy hiatus was not the homecoming American University wrestling hoped for, as the Eagles posted only two victories and lost 36-6 to the visiting Virginia Cavaliers on Sunday afternoon. AU will look to reverse its fortunes next Sunday, Feb. 4, in hosting Drexel and Morgan State.
Notable
- Wrestling down at his new weight class of 149 pounds, Jack Nies got a win for the Eagles, as did Lucas White who wrestled up a weight class at 184 pounds.
- The Eagles filled in backups in a few spots due to various injuries that have altered their lineup in recent weeks.
- Nies got on the board early with a takedown that would prove to be the difference in his bout against Michael Gioffre.
- He led 4-1 after two periods, and despite giving up some penalty points in the third, he was able to come away with the 5-4 decision.
- White set the tone early with a single-leg takedown right at the start against Virginia's Griffin Gammell. The lead was short-lived as he then trailed 7-4 after the first period and still after the second.
- With a huge takedown in the third, White tied it up at 7-7, and then assured himself the riding time point before closing out the bout with a four-point near fall for a 12-7 victory.
