Men's Basketball Falls in Tough Battle at Boston University

BOSTON, Mass. – The American University men's basketball team traded baskets with Boston University for most of the game, but the Terriers rode a hot second half, and the Eagles fell, 72-68. American led by as many as seven points, but the Terriers capitalized on making over 72 percent of their three-point shots in the second half.
 
Notable Numbers
  • Junior Elijah Stephens led American in scoring with 21 points, adding five assists, five steals and four rebounds.
  • Senior Matt Rogers scored 18 points for the Eagles, adding eight rebounds and two assists.
  • American shot just below 52 percent from the field in the second half after making just 25 percent of its shots in the first half.
  • The Eagles only turned the ball over seven times, compared to 10 turnovers from the Terriers.
First Half
  • American got off to a cold start shooting, going scoreless for the first four minutes. An Elijah Stephens three-pointer cut Boston University's lead to 4-3 at the 15:53 mark.
  • The following possession, Stephens stole the ball and finished with a contested fast break layup to give AU its first lead of the game, 5-4, at the 15:34 mark.
  • The Eagles went through a scoreless stretch midway through the half, but a Matt Mayock free throw had the Eagles trailing by only one at the 7:50 mark.
  • A basket from Rogers tied the game at 26 with 0:11 left in the half.
  • The Eagles overcame a poor half shooting to tie the game at the break. AU made only 25 percent of its shots from the field, compared to 37 percent from BU.
  • Stephens led American in scoring at the break with nine points, with senior Lincoln Ball and Rogers each adding seven points.
Second Half
  • The Eagles came out hot to start the second half, making four three-pointers in the first four minutes. American led 42-36 at the 15:10 mark.
  • AU and BU traded baskets during the midway stretch in the second half. American left 52-49 with 9:31 left to play.
  • The Terriers rode a 12-2 run to a 55-52 lead with 7:38 left in the game, as the Eagles went scoreless for two and a half minutes.
  • Sophomore Jermaine Ballisager Webb finished at the rim, drawing a foul as well. He made the free throw to cut the American deficit to three with 6:36 left in the game.
  • Rogers made a pair of free throws, but BU answered with a basket. The Terriers led 64-59 with 3:45 to play.
  • Stephens nailed a three-pointer to keep the Eagles alive, as BU led 69-65 with 1:16 left in the game.
  • Freshman Greg Jones knocked down a three to cut the BU lead to one point with 34 seconds left.
  • The Terriers made 12 of 14 free throws in the second half to put the game on ice, with a final score of 72-68.
