Volleyball Falls in Five Sets at Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. - Despite a dominant performance in the opening two sets at Cal State Fullerton, the match got away from American University volleyball as the Eagles ultimately lost 3-2 on the Titans' home court. It was the second five-set loss of the season for AU, now 5-2 overall.

By the Numbers
  • The bright spot of the match was the double-double performance of junior Lilou Stegeman who posted a career-high 11 blocks while knocking down 10 kills on 17 attempts with zero errors (.588).
  • Grad student Zeynep Uzen led AU with 15 kills and made it a double-double with 12 digs.
  • The Eagles got 16 digs apiece from senior Rachael Bennett and junior Bridget Javitch, along with 14 digs and four aces from senior Maya Mrus.
Notable
  • The Eagles dominated in the opening two sets, out-hitting the Titans .406 to .167 in the first and .481 to .139 in the second.
  • Blocking was key for AU in those two set wins, and at the end of the second the Eagles held a 10-1 advantage in total blocks, thanks in large part to seven block assists from Stegeman.
  • Cal State Fullerton capitalized on AU errors in the third and jumped out to a 22-15 lead down the stretch.
  • The Eagles cut the deficit to 23-21, but the Titans had enough left to win it 25-22 and stay alive in the match.
  • Despite struggling with errors in the fourth set, the Eagles had it tied up at 22-22 in what had been a tight set throughout.
  • One of the biggest runs of the set was the closing one for CSU with three straight kills to win it 25-22 and even the match at 2-2.
  • AU trailed 8-5 in the fifth but came back to tie it up 8-8. It stayed close and was within a point at 11-12 and 12-13, but once again the Titans closed it out.
Next Up
  • American will play its second and final California match on Saturday, facing Loyola Marymount at 1 p.m. Pacific / 4 p.m. Eastern.
