Men’s Soccer Welcomes West Virginia Tuesday Morning

WASHINGTON – American University men's soccer is set to welcome West Virginia University on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 11:30 a.m. The game, originally scheduled for 4 p.m., was moved up due to a forecasted heat wave coming through the region. The Eagles are looking for their first win over the Mountaineers since 1988 in the 10th all-time meeting between the two teams.

  • American enters Tuesday's game with a 0-1-1 record, battling to a 2-2 draw with VCU on Friday.
  • Senior Nevin Baer and sophomore Troy Elgersma each found the back of the net for the Eagles in Friday's draw. Senior Robbie Matei and freshman Reyes Parra each notched an assist in the game.
  • Parra received a Patriot League Player of the Week honorable mention nod on Monday for recording his first collegiate assist.
  • American is led by Head Coach Zach Samol in his fifth season at the head of the program. He is joined by assistant coaches Mike Montross, Patrick Mehlert, and Zach Weidman.  
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT WEST VIRGINIA
  • West Virginia enters Tuesday's contest with a perfect 3-0 record. The Mountaineers are coming off a 2-0 win over Yale. The Mountaineers did not allow a shot on goal in the game.
  • Senior Yutaro Tsukada has now notched a goal and an assist in two straight games. Sophomore Marcus Caldeira has scored in all three of West Virginia's matches so far this season.
  • West Virginia is led by Head Coach Dan Stratford in his fourth season at the head of the program. He is joined on the sideline by Associate Head Coach Andy Wright and Assistant Coach Nick Noble.
  • The Mountaineers were picked to finish third in the Sun Belt Preseason Poll, receiving 77 points including one first-place vote.
