Volleyball Drops City Rivalry Match at Howard in Four Sets

WASHINGTON - The fourth city rivalry match of the season did not go the way of American University volleyball, as the Eagles dropped a 3-1 decision at Howard to finish 2-2 in games against nearby opponents. The Eagles took the early lead with a first-set win, but the Bison got stronger as the night went on.

By the Numbers
  • Howard senior Jennifer Bolden and sophomore Rya McKinnon were unstoppable for the Bison, combining for 36 of their team's 52 kills.
  • For the Eagles, both grad student Zeynep Uzen and freshman Sofia Osterdahl finished in double figures in kills, with Uzen posting 16 and Osterdahl adding 13.
  • Osterdahl recorded her second career double-double with 11 digs to go with her 13 kills.
  • Junior Esma Sipahi also notched a double-double, adding a team-best 12 digs to 27 assists.
  • Howard earned 12 extra points on service aces with 16 of them to AU's four, but also lost nine points on the serve with 18 errors to the Eagles' nine.
Notable
  • Uzen had six kills in a strong first set, the last of those coming on the set-winning point as AU took it, 25-23.
  • While neither team hit well to start the match, Howard struggled mightily with 11 first-set errors to AU's five. For the rest of the night, the Bison committed no more than five hitting errors in a set, including a one-error set in the second.
  • The Eagles were in every set they lost, with Howard winning 25-23 in the second, 25-19 in the third, and 25-22 in the fourth.
  • McKinnon was the difference-maker for the Bison as they rallied back in the second set. She posted eight kills with zero errors, hitting .571.
  • AU had it tied 19-19 in the third set before the Bison closed out on a 6-0 run.
Next Up
  • American will begin Patriot League play on the road as the Eagles play at Holy Cross on Friday, Sept. 22 (6 p.m.) and Army on Saturday, Sept. 23 (4 p.m.).
