Women’s Soccer Defeats Army, 2-1, to Open PL Action

WASHINGTON – American University women's soccer opened Patriot League action with a big win against Army West Point Saturday afternoon at Reeves Field. Sophomore Alyssa Giroux netted the Eagles' first goal of the game late in the first half and after the Black Knights evened the score, it was junior Brooke Steel who scored the game-winner for the Eagles in 66th minute. 
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • Giroux picked up her third consecutive goal this season. She netted the Eagles' final two goals in their 3-3 draw against George Washington on Sunday.
  • Steel's goal was her second of the season. She also recorded an assist in the game. 
  • Graduate student Ashley Molz picked up her first assist of the season after assisting on the Eagles' second goal of the game. 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American started the game off strong, with sophomore Avery Klingensmith quickly testing the Black Knights' goalkeeper in the sixth minute to get the first shot of the game.
  • The Eagles maintained possession of most of the first half, earning five corners in the first 44 minutes of regulation.
  • With just minutes left in the half, from a set piece off a corner, Steel took a shot at the ball which bounced off the Army defense, but Giroux was able to find the back of the net to give American the lead.
  • In the first five minutes of the second half, Army scored to even the game.
  • In the 66th minute, the Eagles drew a free kick outside the box. Graduate student Ashley Molz headed the ball to Steel who headed the ball through Army's defense into the back of the net to break the tie.
  • The Black Knights could not find a second equalizer as the clock hit zero, giving the Eagles the weekend win.   
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Junior goalkeeper Julia Kato picked up two saves in the match.
  • The Eagles had four shots on goal and ten shots is the contest.
  • Giroux and Klingensmith led the team in shots, with two each.
