Women’s Soccer Opens Patriot League Slate Saturday, Welcomes Army to Reeves

WASHINGTON – Coming off a big three-goal second half performance at George Washington on Sunday, American University women's soccer now turns its attention to Patriot League play. The Eagles are set to begin league play on Saturday, welcoming Army West Point to Reeves.

INSIDE THE SERIES
  • Army leads the all-time series, 8-6-10, and leads in the last five meetings, 3-1-1.
  • Army won the 2022 matchup between the two squads, 1-0, in West Point.
  • The last time the Eagles defeated the Black Knights was on Oct. 2, 2021, at Reeves by a 1-0 final score. The win marked the first win for the program over Army since 2009.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN
  • American is coming off a 3-3 tie with crosstown rival George Washington on Sunday. After being down 3-0 at halftime, American exploded for a three-goal second half to earn the draw.
  • Freshman Lailah Stewart and sophomore Alyssa Giroux found the back of the net for American in the draw. Both netted their first collegiate goals.
  • Giroux leads the team in goals with two, while Stewart along with sophomore Avery Klingensmith, and freshman Bella Vozar have each recorded an assist for the Eagles so far this season.
  • Junior Julia Kato, junior Jordan Mahony, and senior Izzy Kadzban have all been named captains for the 2023 season.
  • Head Coach Marsha Harper is in her fourth season at the head of the program. She is joined once again on the sidelines by assistant coaches Katie Greenberg and Matt Freibaum
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT ARMY
  • Army enters Saturday's game coming off a 3-0 win over UAlbany in its final non-conference game of the season.
  • Senior Kaitlin Palaian leads the Black Knights with three goals. Junior Kaelan Bradley leads the team in assists with four. Palaian was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, after she netted goals in both Black Knights' wins last week.
  • Palaian and senior Jasmine Talley are the Black Knights' 2023 captains.
  • Army is led by head coach Tracy Chao in her third season at the head of the program. She is joined on the sidelines by assistant coaches Tori Ball and Mason Portalski.   
  • The Black Knights were selected to finish second in the league this season in the league's Preseason Poll, receiving five first place votes
POST-GAME YOUTH SKILLS CLINIC
  • Saturday is the program's free post game kids' clinic for children eighth grade and younger. 
  • The clinic is to take place from 3:15 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. after the Eagles' 1 p.m. game against Army. There will be an autograph session after the clinic.
  • Youth should bring tennis shoes or cleats, plus a soccer ball if you have one.

 ENHANCED CONCESSIONS FOR WEEKEND HOME GAMES
  • AU Athletics is proud to continue its partnership with Gregorio's Trattoria to provide an enhanced concessions menu for all home weekend women's and men's soccer contests this season.
  • The gates to Reeves Field and the Gregorio's grill station will open one hour prior to kickoff at each Saturday and Sunday afternoon home game this fall. 
  • Fans can enjoy Gregorio's favorites from the grill station to the left of the Reeves Field bleachers, including menu selections of freshly grilled burgers, Italian sausage and peppers, all-beef hot dogs, chips, snacks, candy, and a selection of cold Pepsi and Gatorade beverages.
  • Outside food and drink is not permitted into Reeves Field at weekend home games.
