Women’s Soccer Battles Longwood to Second Draw of the Season

WASHINGTON – American University women's soccer continued its 2023 home slate on Tuesday with a 0-0 draw against the Longwood University Lancers. Despite breaking through the Lancers' defense, outshooting the visitors 10-4, the Eagles were unable to find their first goal of the season as they picked up their second draw.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Freshman Lailah Stewart made her first collegiate start in Tuesday's contest.
  • The draw marks the first tie between the two programs. The all-time series history now stands at 4-3-1, with the Eagles leading.
  • Junior Julia Kato recorded her eighth career shutout. She is just one shutout away from moving into a tie for fifth all-time career shutouts in American's record book.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles started the game off strong, taking three shots in the first ten minutes of the game.
  • With seconds left to go in the first half, a shot from the Lancers looked as if it would make it over the goal line but Kato was there to make the stop and keep the game scoreless heading into the half.
  • Junior Brooke Steel had a good opportunity to score in the 56th minute off a counterattack from a Longwood corner kick but her shot went wide and to the right.
  • In the last 15 minutes of regulation, the Eagles' offensive fired off four shots and a corner kick opportunity, but was unable to put one away as the second half came to a close.
