WASHINGTON - Her fifth year began much the way the others have gone, as
Zeynep Uzen led the American University volleyball offense in two of three matches and has been named the
Gregorio's Trattoria Student-Athlete of the Week. The Eagles defeated local rivals George Mason and George Washington, and narrowly lost to Georgetown in five sets.
Uzen posted a double-double of 21 kills and 11 digs in a 3-2 win at George Mason, and followed that up with a season-high 25 kills while hitting .315 against Georgetown. She added 10 digs to seven kills in the Eagles' 3-0 sweep of George Washington, and finished the weekend averaging 3.65 kills per set and 2.30 digs per set.
After her first six kills in the third match against Georgetown, Uzen moved herself into seventh place all-time at American with 1,286 career kills. She now has 1,305 overall.
The Eagles will be back in action at home on Friday, Sept. 1 and Saturday, Sept. 2 to host Maryland Eastern Shore, Central Connecticut State, and Marist in a round robin tournament.
