Women's Soccer Falls Friday to Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – American University women's soccer fell, 1-0, to the University of Pennsylvania on Friday. Despite the Eagles' strong defense in the first half, it was a penalty kick goal by the Quakers in the 64th minute that proved to be the difference and hand the Eagles their second loss of the season.
 
QUICK NOTABLES
  • Sophomore Phoebe Merrigan made her first collegiate start on Friday.
  • Friday's contest was the first time since 2016 that the two squads have played each other in Philadelphia.  
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore Avery Klingensmith had the first shot of the game for either side, as she looked to find the back of the net for American, but her shot was stopped by Penn's goalkeeper to keep the game scoreless early.
  • Penn fired off six shots in the first half, but the Eagles' defense kept all the goal attempts from finding the back of the net.  
  • The Quaker's had a good chance to take the lead in the 57th minute but freshman Kendall Henderson kicked the ball out at the last second to keep the game at knotted at zero.  
  • American's two chances in the second half came from freshman Bella Miller, but both of her shots just missed the mark.
  • Penn took the lead in the 64th minute off a penalty kick.
  • Klingensmith made one last attempt for the Eagles to equalize in the 87th minute but her shot was blocked.
