Lacrosse Battles Back to Force Overtime, Falls to Colgate on the Road

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Eagles and the Raiders traded goals back and forth all afternoon, and Colgate (4-10, 3-5 PL) wouldn't find the lead until the fourth quarter. Despite coming back to tie it all up at 15 with four seconds left in regulation with a goal from Annabelle Jackson to forcing overtime, the American University lacrosse team (6-9, 2-6 PL) would fall in golden-goal extra time.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Offensively, junior Hannah Spease would lead for American with five goals off six shots total; all six shots on target. She also grabbed two draw controls.
  • First year offensive duo Kellie Linehan and Jackson combined for seven goals, Linehan with four, notching an assist as well, and Jackson with three. Linehan also claimed a draw control.
  • Alyssa Apuzzo, Maddy Spratt, and Reagan Murdoch each sent in one goal. Spratt grabbed two assists and Murdoch was credited with one.
  • Defensively, senior Sadie Herman and junior Jordan Mitchell led with three ground balls and a caused turnover apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a quick one-two-three from the Eagles. Linehan notched the first goal less than a minute into the game before Murdoch added a second less than a minute later, on a free position shot.
  • Linehan then added an assist when she passed off to Jackson to put the Eagles up 3-0 with 12:37 left to play in the first quarter.
  • Colgate then added two of their own, trailing 3-2 with 7:46 left to play, but in the span of 90 seconds, the Eagles sent two goals in, from Linehan and Jackson each earning their brace.
  • The Raiders again added two more of their own, but American maintained a 5-4 lead through the opening frame.
  • To start the scoring in the second, it was Linehan who earned a hat-trick for herself, scoring with 11:06 remaining in the half. She was followed by Spratt with her first goal and the Apuzzo with her first, assisted by Murdoch and the Eagles had an 8-4 lead with 6:46 left in the first half of play.
  • Colgate wasn't going down without a fight though and the Raiders posted two more goals for themselves to end the half down two, the Eagles up 8-6.
  • Coming out of the break, the Raiders continued their run with two more goals, four in a row, to tie the game up at 8-all with 11:56 left in the third frame.
  • Spease grabbed her first goal of the day before Linehan padded the lead with her fourth and the Eagles were back up 2 goals. Quick as lightning though, Spease sent a dagger through the defense into the top of the goal, up 11-8, in the span of two minutes with 8:41 left in the third.
  • Colgate grabbed a goal to stop the Eagles run before adding another. The Eagles maintained a one goal, 11-10 lead for 2:34 before Spease rocked one in from distance.
  • Spease, again, was the goal-scorer when she sent in a seemingly impossible shot through traffic to push American up 13-10 before Colgate scored just ten seconds later putting one into the net, finishing the third with the Eagles up 13-11.
  • Fifty seconds into the fourth quarter, the Raiders had scored two more and the contest was knotted 13-all with 14:10 left to go. Seven minutes later, with 7:07 left to play, the Raiders took the lead, Eagles down one, 13-14. Colgate's run was extended to five, leading 13-15 over American until Spease, with 1:13 left to play in the contest, scored her fifth and the Eagles were down just 14-15.
  • Jackson would score the tying 15-all goal with four seconds left in regulation to force extra time, but with two minutes remaining in the first overtime period, the Raiders would score the game-winner with a free position goal, the Eagles falling 15-16 in overtime.
